I'm looking for something wider than my 28-75. I don't want to pay the Canon L price, because this is not a lens that I will use that often. Any opinions on the Tamrons or other?

thanks,
daniel

How much wider?

I cant think of any really cheap lenses under 28mm but there are some cheaper ones

20mm f/1.8 sigma is only a few hundred

the 17-40 is an L, but it's not like most L's in that is only $680...so i'm not real sure what your budget it, nor how wide you want...

Drisley just got this 17mm Tokina that looks really good for <$400. He posted a bunch of test shots too, check out the thread.

Well, I was thinking around 17mm and under $500 if possible. I typically don't shoot with anything wider than 28 and have never had a real interest in it so I'm not real familiar with whats available. I won't use it real often, but I will use it for paid portraits now and then, so it has to be descent.

Pick up the 18-55 EF-S Rebel kit lense off ebay for $100 and cut off the back of the lense.

Thanks Phil.
Yes, I was in the exact same boat as you dsze.
I wanted something wide to replace the 18-50mm kit lens I lost when I sold the 300D.
I don't use wide angle often, so I wanted to save money but still wanted decent quality.
After MUCH research, I bought the Tokina 17mm F3.5 ATX PRO.
I have to say it's worth every penny. It's only $365 at Adorama.
It's built like a tank, 3 yr warranty, sharp as a 17-40L, very little distortion, excellent flare control, comes with a cool leather case.
What more could you ask for, besides zoom?
This lens is much sharper than the 18-50mm kit lens. They are not even in the same league optically or in any other way.
In fact I dont think there is any lens out there in this league (17mm, sharp, cheap, built like an L lens.)
Check out the link that pcasciola posted above, and also read this review (external link).

thanks everyone...I'll be looking very closely at the Tokina 17 in the next week. I'll let you all know what I decide.... Great photos BTW, drisley! They make me want to order the 17mm right now!

As for the rebel kit lens... been there. I'll pass on that one! :)

Thanks dsze.
All I can say is that the Tokina is an awesome option if you dont need zoom. I can guarantee you won't be disappointed.

I'm sold. I've just added this lense to my wish list. I need to stop browsing these forums, bad for my wallet.

I have a Tamron 19-35 lens that's pretty good.. Cost $300 or so IIRC. Was planning to sell it as I picked up a Canon 16-35L.
