Looks good ... shame the longer lenses are more pricey than Canon equivelents.

A copy what I said at FM:

‘‘Haha, I checked it [the review] out, and what I enjoyed must was to see that the 40D performed much better in the high-ISO tests, and Phil didn’t mention anything about that. I noticed that he never (at least almost) says anything better about the Canon equivalent in a side-by-side comparison.

Yeah, we know he’s a Nikon guy, and I’m fine with that, but that he never says that the Canon equivalent is a better in some comparisons, is funny!
’’

The D300 is for sure fine, but I’d save my money and go for the Canon setup, which, probably 99% of the time, will perform as well. Well, the 51-spot AF could come in handy though, but I think the 20D, 20Da, 30D, 40D and 5D have been doing a fine job with ‘only’ 9-spot AF.

Donte,
Looks like they made no progress with ISO
According to the specs posted at dpreview it only goes as low as ISO 200
That ain't low enough for me ;)

I'd still rather have a 5D, or a 40D: just more comfortable with the Canon system. That being said, the D300 and the D3 are the first Nikon digitals that I can truly say I wouldn't mind owning and using at all, so I gotta give them some credit.

One of the break throughs with the D300 that is of interest,

They put there top lever High End pro value AF system in an affordable camera.

Canon shooters have been asking for such a thing for over half a decade, it's even part of the perennial specs for the ever out of reach EOS 3D (currently residing in Shangri La with Sasquatch )
Now also for years the more economic minded Canon shooters have poopooe'd the idea of Canon ever doing such a move. It would put Canon's high priced 1 Series in jeopardy of reduced sales etc..

And yet, along came Noink, and they've done it here.

Impressive move.
Will Canon counter?

A good friend of mine just bought the D300 and I had a bit of a play with it yesterday. All I can say is WOW... almost everything about that camera is gorgeous, especially the viewfinder and that LCD. Drool-worthy stuff!

I sincerely hope Canon does counter, because all of a sudden my 350D doesn't seem as great as I once thought it was! :o

Probably because this is a Canon forum.

I can agree with your desire to a certain extent, however, Pro cameras are Pro cameras simply because of these extra features. If Canon started putting their pro features on all of there consumer level cameras, than there would be little reason to purchase a pro level camera. Just my 2 cents.

So why did Nikon? Don't forget, the D3 is their 1-series really.

Not my desire, only reporting on the threads that we see here on POTN all the time, and the fact that it was Noink that actually took the bait.

I have to admit, that if my 20D was able to AF as well as my MkII I would not have given it to my brother in law!

The D3 shooter can now have a full fledged full sized pro body, and when he goes ghetto with the more portable back up body, he still has the perfromance he expects from his #1 body.

I have to admit it's a compelling option there even for the pro with the high dollar model.

For the ones that want the performance but can't afford or justify a $5k body? the D300 is a solid solution.

Oh and your Poo pooing again :)
(it's o-kay, I was always among the poopooer's too.. the Noink D300 takes me totally off guard. :) )
