Im currently in China and am wanting to buy the 400D, but face a bit of a dillemma. China is notoroius for fakes. i cheked the canon website to see how I would be able to verify whether or not the camera was fake but couldnt find anything. Im sure its kinda like wheres waldo and i missed it. So is there any easy way of checking on the whethor or not its genuine? I mean serial numbers can be copied just as easily. Any help would be appreciated.

FYI: I found this interesting
The 400d model on the canon china website has a msrp of over $1,000
Obviously i wont pay that much but I thought that was a little surprising.

Welcome to the forums.
First of all, do you live in the US or Canada? because if you do and you purchase the 400D over there, you won't get US/Canada warranty.

Are you in Beijing ?

There are several reputable photographic shops in a group beside the Xidan Post Office (best deals are available round the corner). If I mind right this is east of Xidan subway station. I have dealt with these shops occasionally and have been well pleased with the service and consideration I have received. I do find it better to have a local interpreter ! I was sent here by a local Pro - who said this was where all the pros buy their gear.

Negotiation should bring the price down by a third or so (varies a bit, go for it) from the ticket price.

Buy your memory here too. Probably more expensive than in the west, but avoiding fakes is much more difficult elsewhere.

Warranty - I don't think the warranty will be valid outside China, not even in Asia; certainly not in Europe or N.America. I have one Canon product (external hard drive with CF slots) which Canon Europe flatly refused to help find an English instruction sheet for.

Mike.

Unfortunately im not in beijing but in qinghai province. thanks for the tip though, I might be able to get someone who lives their to help me out. You wouldnt have a business card of theirs would you? in that case I could just call and negotiate over the phone.

Still...any ideas on how you go about verifying its authenticity?

lets see if this link works

If thats true that they wouldnt go to the trouble of fakes then I could get some really good deals. RMB to US dollar is 7.1 to 1

I've seen fake ipods, fake memory sticks/SD/compact flash, fake food, and fake everything. China can make anything fake. I would order from Japan/Korea/Singapore and mail it in.

Fake medicine as well. imagine going to the hospital and getting that. china has a tax on cameras sent in, otherwise i could get it sent from the US. But those other places are also an idea. i wonder if taiwan or japan offer it cheaper.

Make a weekend trip to Hong Kong... much better chances to get good stuff there.

Yeah...right now, many things are becoming an issue as far as fakes go.
I don't blame your concern but will have to admit, some of them are difficult to tell.
Chances are, you'll end up getting a Canan EOZ 400C.
