I urge all photographers in the UK to contact your MP and ask them to support this Early Day Motion

PHOTOGRAPHY IN PUBLIC AREAS
11.03.2008

Mitchell, Austin

That this House is concerned to encourage the spread and enjoyment of photography as the most genuine and accessible people's art; deplores the apparent increase in the number of reported incidents in which the police community support officers (PCSOs) or wardens attempt to stop street photography and order the deletion of photographs or the confiscation of cards, cameras or film on various specious ground such as claims that some public buildings are strategic or sensitive, that children and adults can only be photographed with their written permission, that photographs of police and PCSOs are illegal, or that photographs may be used by terrorists; points out that photography in public places and streets is not only enjoyable but perfectly legal; regrets all such efforts to stop, discourage or inhibit amateur photographers taking pictures in public places, many of which are in any case festooned with closed circuit television cameras; and urges the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers to agree on a photography code for the information of officers on the ground, setting out the public's right to photograph public places thus allowing photographers to enjoy their hobby without officious interference or unjustified suspicion.

I've written to mine asking him to sign up to it, if we all write to our MP it may gain some weight and put an end to the impending police state.

You can find and email your MP by putting your postcode in the link below

This petition will be rejected.

The government/police/anti-terrorism branch have recently started a public campaign asking for assistance in reporting suspiscious looking people taking pictures of public places.

As draconian as this might seem to people, this is something that needs to be done to combat terrorism.

As I've said before on a similar thread. I would welcome being stopped and questioned by a police officer about what I was doing. The alternative (someone freely taking pictures so that they can be used in planning a terrorist attack) to too horrendous to comprehend.

For the record, I was a witness to one of the Tube bombs going off. It's a sight and experience that I never want to go through again.

This is not a petition, it's an EDM (which can only be started by a current sitting MP) and has so far been signed by 18 MP's across all party's.

The EDM is to make sure all PCSO and Police offers are informed of the current law, that photography is a totally legal activity

Well I, for one, would NOT welcome being stopped for no good reason.

Nor would I welcome being asked to prove I was over 18 to buy alcohol etc.

Old fashioned as I may be, I value my privacy.

I obviously support this but I would like to point out that early day motions (petitions by MPs for a debate) are very very rarely debated.

And everyone who buys a box of matches should be questioned, you never know they maybe an arsonist.

That bloke whistling down the street, is it a tune or a code signal to his terrorist mate across the road.

What annoys me is that there are zillions of people with camera phones, small cameras etc that snap away with no hassle but anyone with a serious interest in photography with say larger lenses are deemed to be potential terrorists etc. Surely, any self respecting nasty would not want to draw attention to themselves and would be most unlikely to be out with a 1D and 70-200 f /2.8 etc?

The UK is going crazy. More CCTV's than anywhere on Earth yet if WE want to take pictures it's a problem. I'll write to my MP, David Cameron! Wonder what he will say :)

I'm not sure but it does work as I have used it in the past and have always had a direct response from my MP and even now I have received a confirmation directly from my MPs Westminster email address acknowledging receipt.

I wrote to mine about this a couple of days ago, using the same link that's posted in this thread. My MP then signed the motion and wrote me a letter back, so it works!

Standing up for your own rights as a photographer doesn't condone terrorism and will not perpetuate it.

raising this issue will not make things any worse, in fact it will probably do people some good to realise they don't have to sit back and put up with silly things put in place that inconvenience those who are enjoying a genuine hobby and art form.
