C.Fn 01 - Noise Reduction

Is there any reason why you would not leave custom function 01 (long exposure noise reduction) set to "ON" all of the time?

The manual says it kicks in when exposure time is over one second. The G1 has a similar feature that stays on all the time. Thanks.

I leave mine on all the time. It only kicks in for very long exposures anyway.

The downside is that the D30 basically takes the shot twice, once with the shutter open, once with it closed, and then does the noise reduction. This means for long exposures, it can take a long time to take the noise reduction sampling.

I wish there was an option to have it kick in at slower speeds. I'd love to have it at iso 1600 - even if it made my shot to shot times slower!

What about taking a shot with the lens cap on, then subtracting the image in PhotoShop? Maybe someone skilled at PS can do an experiment?

I did a quick experiment tonight. I took two shots right after each other in manual mode, one with the lens cap on, the other with it off. I then subtracted the one image from the other - the noise got *worse*. I tried adding too just for fun - the noise still got worse. I tried a few different channels, etc. - no luck. I think it failed because the 1/2 second it took between shots to put the lens cap on, etc. is too slow and gives the cmos sensor too much variance. Either that, or at the faster speed the raw sensor noise doesn't settle down.

On the other hand, I love digital! I never could have performed the experiment so quickly for free!

I won't have my D30 for a couple more months... I'm closing on a house next week, and the wife seems to think the house is more important than my camera!
