Just got one of these and I really like it. If you don't use external flash all the time like me, this is a cool little accessory. Basically, it is a piece of plastic which fits inside and fills the hot shoe on top of your camera. From what I see, it isn't a mold but it was precision cut and it fits in there extremely well. It is a tight fit, but you don't have to force it in, it is just designed well and cut with very small tolerances. It gives your camera (IMO) a more finished look vs. the exposed hot shoe connectors and it protects them from dirt as well. I guess if you're rough with your camera and happens that you bang the hot show against a firm object, the metal parts won't bend. The reason why I got it when I saw it was that, the hot shoe was catching on the net of my Crumpler bag once in a while and was bugging me. Won't be having this problem anymore and it is only $12.95 shipped. E mail this guy if you want one : tecsol@comcast.net or click on the link bellow. Cheers.

It shows G series cameras. Will it fit a 40D?

The hotshoe is pretty much standardized so if it fits a G seires cameras it'll fit the standard hotshoe of any other camera.

Be aware that it will interfere with the operation of the pop-up flash as it depresses the micro-switch that tells the camera you've mounted an external flash. Someone's located a hot shoe cover that goes over the entire shoe so doesn't mess with this.

Jon's response above addressed the same concern I had. While the hotshoe mount is standard, the surrounding around it is not.

Yes, but having the cover on is not going to harm anything. It'll just prevent the pop-up flash from popping up. As long as you know that the built-in flash isn't going to work with the cover on, then everything is cool. Besides, asking if a cover will fit a hotshoe is different from asking if the pop-up flash is still going to work with the cover on. ;)

"G" cover is specifically designed for G7/G9 cameras.
40D cover has no "G" engraved on the top and is different from G, S, XT or P type of cover.

The designation for 40D hot shoe cover is CHSC-ND.
This model will also work with newer 5D (equiped with silver hot shoe) as well as 1D/Ds Mark III.

When the specific cover is used with designated camera model it will not impair function of the onboard flash when inserted into hot shoe.

The covers are precision machined from Delrin (dense material from nylon family) which was choosen for the ideal properties for the application due to it's natural lubricity and lack of electrical conductivity.

Every cover is designed to fully seal the electrical contacts from dust and moisture, the main contributors to premature deterioration and corrosion.

Hope, this answer the main questions about the Custom Hot Shoe Covers for Canon cameras.

Regards

Richard Franiec

I've shot for over 30 years with cameras that have had hot shoe contacts and I've never had a flash fail from corroded contacts. I think someone's making money from a perceived but unnecessary need. Besides, the things are so small they're going to get lost while not on the camera.

I wholeheartedly agree.

If you like the "look," like the people who wanted to change out the color of the hot shoe because they liked the painted/unpainted (didn't care to remember the details of that whole "bling" thread ;)) look better than what came standard, that's fine. I'm quite sure I could find some other accessory to spend my money on that would be harder to lose and more likely to have any impact on my end results.

My Canon A-1 camera, which I bought new in the late 70s, came with a hotshoe cover. I still have the A-1 and I still have the original hotshoe cover for, too. You why? It's because as soon as I took my brand new A-1 camera out of the box, I removed the hotshoe cover and put it inside a 35mm film canister and threw it into my photo gear storage box, never to be used again. And the contacts on my A-1 still work fine after all these years. :)

^Ditto...or I might as well use the 5D. I've used my pop up maybe 5 times in the past 3 years I've had a DSLR. And that was just because and I stop using it because I hated how the photos turned out so I cranked the ISO, shot at F2.8, and dealt with the DOF. They were just for fun shots anyhow.

IMO, huge waste of money that'll get you something from Wendy's or something a couple of times or...idk, $10 can really get you something these days. Go to a local shop and ask if you can have one off a Noink.
