i know what umbrella size i want, i just don't know which kind.

Please help me with this. I'm going the strobist route and so the question is. . . which one of these umbrellas should i get ??

Silver
white (shoot through)
or
white with black backing ??

did i miss any ?

Get the Westcott 43inch. Either the silver or the white will work. They are 20$ and fold to about 12 - 14 inches.

+1 on the 43" wescott compacts. get one silver, and one white shoot through with black cover. folded size is 13". both bh and mpex have them

silver umbrella (external link)

the white with black back is 25$. Yes you will need to buy a separate umbrella swivel. Impact sells one for around 15$. There is a better one by manfrotto for 30$. I use the Impact. Works fine for me.

yes, the 43" NOT the 45". the 43 is the way to go because it folds down to 13". imho, you need the 43" ss for general umbrelling, and the 43" compact white with removeable black cover for shoot-through. makes a good fake softbox and takes minimal space in your kit. as for umbrella swivels, i vote for flashzebras swivels. i have two and they are excellent and come with extra studs for other uses. first rate service adn shipping too.
