Posted many of these on another forum, but thought I'd put 'em up here just for grins, since I haven't posted much on POTN in a while. These shots cover three games over the last week or so.

These are all shot with the MkIIN and 70-200 f/2.8L, ISO1600 (a little higher than I've used before at the United Center) and shutter speeds from 1/640s-1/1000s at f/2.8-f/3.5.

Pro stuff as always - SI material !

Thanks for leaving your exif intact. I like reading it to see where you're at ......why do you shoot evaluative metering? You mentioned something about it quickly on a thread way back, but I didn't get back to asking you.

and send me your cameras and lenses! Great shots, especially since they are of the Hawks (my favourite team) and two of Vancouver (my adopted home team now!). Dare I say the only fault is that the ice around Luongo may be a bit "hot", but the colors are super.

What post processing if any did you do? and RAW or JPEG out of camera?

Cheers!

Chris

Thanks, y'all. These are all shot JPG. FWIW, I rarely shoot RAW. I do a quick batch process that does a bit of noise reduction/sharpening then crop/straighten and resize.

For these, I did a CWB on the "dirty" ice.

Dare I say the only fault is that the ice around Luongo may be a bit "hot",

Yeah, I tend to expose for the faces and white of the jerseys, and occasionally the ice gets a wee bit blown out, but IMO that's preferable to underexposing the players. You'll see the same thing from me (and others) under bright sunshine when shooting baseball this Summer. The uni's might be a bit hot in return for getting faces exposed properly.

why do you shoot evaluative metering?

I don't even think about this since I shoot manual and I almost never use my in-camera reflective meter for exposure. I've shot at the UC before, but the first time, I used an incident light meter to get my baseline exposure and then varied things up and down a bit based on histograms and results. When I do use the in-camera meter, as in when shooting in Av mode, I've found evaluative metering does the best job.

The pics are great (as always) but I have some questions on your exposures. How do you use the histograms? The histogram from #1 (I can view it but can't post it) seems distorted way to the right from the ice and white boards. Don't you have to ignore the histogram and just go from what you chimp on the LCD (results)?

Phil

BTW, I'm asking because I just tried my new B800s in a test shoot in a local gym. The strobes lit the subject in the foreground but the background (on the far end of the gym) was dark (as expected). I adjusted for a nice histogram and found I way overexposed my subject basketball players to compensate (on the histogram) for the dark bleachers etc.

In this case (as with hockey), shouldn't I chimp the players (the results part of your equation) and forget the histogram?

Thank you.

Dennis, I love the second. That's got trading card written all over it. #5 is great too, not that the action is anything over the top but catching the ref in flight during a solid shot makes it really special. Nice on that.

I was surprised to hear you use evaluative ever. I know you're a big fan of the incident meter (which I still haven't purchased..) but I always felt like CWA worked well for situations where I wanted to expose for the athlete while considering the overall ambient. Can't argue with your results though so great work man and thanks for sharing.

Histograms are interesting. Shooting hockey, a properly-exposed image will inherently have most of the info from the middle to the far right, simply because there is mostly highlight and mid-tone information. A night football shot, on the other hand, when properly-exposed, will lack the highlights and have most of the date from just to the right of the middle to the left half.

I was surprised to hear you use evaluative ever.

Well, that's just my experience. I normally shoot in manual and ignore the meter anyway. However, of course, the meter comes into play when shooting Av, as this is where the camera gets its light readings to calculate shutter speed (for the chosen aperture and ISO). I'll use Exposure Compensation as a way to correct what the camera is doing.

Wow, you truely have mastered the art of taking a hockey shot.

I love catching a game at night on tv, and then lucking out when you happen to post pics on it.

A person would have their hands full when O'Donnell grabbed a hold of them... no Georgie, but tougher than nails...
