I'm helping a woman who is interested in buying a SLR body and lens and has $1000 to spend. She is interested in nature/scenic/wildlife things so I'm advising her to consider something like an XT body and a Tamron 18-250.

What other suggestions would you make?

Nic

Just did the same thing for my brother in law. He bought a 30D kit from Amazon and a nifty. I know thats not much reach, perhaps the 28-105 would be a good start.

OK, I'll play:

350D - $400
Canon 18-55 IS - $175
Canon 55-250 IS - $300

Total: $875 - enough left to buy some CF cards and a bag.
EDIT: or get an XTi for $520 instead.

The 18-55 IS is very sharp - I have one. The 55-250 IS is getting good reviews but I haven't tried it myself.

I'd pick up a 30D and a mild zoom lens, such as the Tamron you suggested.
