I know...another one of these topics. Please bare with me. I've searched, but couldn't really come to an answer. Here are my choices and my reasoning.

1. 24-70 f/2.8L
2. 16-35 f/2.8 II L
3.Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
4. Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
5. YOU DECIDE! Please? Tell me...why this option?

I am willing to go outside of Canon, but this is a Canon forum after all. ;)
Also note the relatively large apertures. This lens will serve as an indoor portrait lens with available lighting. I do have a flash, but still have yet to get good at it so any additional help in the form of aperture would be nice. It will also be heavily used in a portrait session I have coming up. It's my first, so I want it to come out well. I already have a Sigma 30mm, which may contribute to your input.

My friend suggested the Tamron, and as I've mentioned I'm open to pretty much anything. I just need versatility and indoor capability. I have a crop body BTW.

That's one that I've been considering as well. Thanks for the input! So many choices!

I understand your argument, but I was going to use the advice for portrait photography, so I thought it might get more attention in the people section. Thanks though! :D

24-70 f/2.8L all the way! as long as it will meet your needs on the wide end.

You will need something that goes close to 70mm for nice looking portraits.

I didnt have the money to shell out for the 24-70 f/2.8L...so i went with the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 after reading numerous and i mean NUMEROUS reviews...and I have NOT been disappointed with it and my XTi.

I did the exact same thing. I'd still like a 24-70/2.8 but it's been moved way down my list. The Tamron 28-75/2.8 performs very well at nearly a third the price.

I quite often find myself in very tight quarters for my shoots so I just added the 16-35/2.8 and so far it is working out quite well. You just have to watch that wide end and distortion. It doesn't flatter people, it fatters them....

Personally, I'd stick with the Canon "L glass". They cost more, but won't let you down in their clarity and performance. Additionally, if you decide that you want to try a different lens, the "L's" retain their value extremely well and are always in demand. Take good care of it and you can sell it for 85 to 90% of what you purchased it for in a year or two.

Nothing to debate here.

LightRules is 99% right. If you have a crop body, the 17-55 2.8 IS is the best lens you can buy.
For the other 1%, I'll need to know how much money you're willing to spend.
