Finally buying a good digital camera

i am finally going to make the big jump from film to digital.
i am at this point only considering two cameras the canon 20d and the nikon d100. i am currently leaning more toward the canon, but need an extra push i guess, convince me that the 20d is the right choice.

I don't get it, which film system are you using now, do you have any lens collection?

If you currentlly use Canon system and have Canon lenses, the choice is simple, otherwise you have to sell all your nikon gear.

I have never really looked at these questions and thought I needed to convince anyone, one way or the other. To me photography is such a personal thing with the equipment, bodies, lens's, etc that I wanted to make those decisions after doing a fare bit of research on my own and lurking around boards like this. Asking the questions only gets you a small sample size from the forums. Additionally, since this is a Canon forum what responses do you think you'll get? Buy the D100? I doubt that will be the case. actually i have done a lot of resaerch. just wnated to get some opinions. thats why i posted the same question on a nikon board, that way the people that know the most about each system can reply.

Having both systems is quite an expensive route to take, no?

The 20D is a better camera then the D100. I'm not saying this because I am biased, I actually shot Nikon for a while and think they are great even far better then Canon in many cases.

In terms of low-end dSLRs, Canon beats out Nikon's low-end stuff.

I would take inventory of all the lenses and total the value of the lenses. If you find that you have an 80 -200 f2.8 Nikkor and photography is only a hobby then perhaps go the Nikon route. I would look at the D70 over the D100 - newer technology.

If you find that the lenses are of equal value then I would seriously look at the Canon 20D. Dont take our word but research and you will find that the 20D is in a different league than the D70 or D100.

Why not sell both system and get the KonicaMinolta D7, its getting excellent reviews and is IMO a better camera than the 20D, it certainly looks more impressive. As Phil on DP review said a number of times ín the D20 review the difference in resolution between 6mp and 8mp isn't great. The KM 7D makes up for the slight drop in res by having IS on every lens, it's a fantastic thing IMO. I also think the KM flash system beats Canon's hands down, especially if you use it wireless.

The D100 was the competitor of the Canon D60... that was ages ago in digital terms.

If you want to use Canon lenses, the D20 is a good camera right now.

If you want to use Nikon lenses, wait a while. The D100 is almost certain to be replaced with a camera comparable to the D20 within a few months to a year.

Neither Nikon nor Canon is going to let the other company get too far ahead for too long.

Maybe not too far ahead but at least Canon seems to be consistently ahead.

I'm in a similar situation, but for me the choice is quite clear.

I have a Nikon 601 with some 'consumer' lenses and was an avid Nikon supporter until I got my G2. When I got the G2, I was introduced to this forum .

Since then, I have arrived at the conviction that the Canon system is a lot more attractive than the Nikon system, the difference being mainly the lenses available and the lead in the digital area.

Another thing that can be learned is that 'consumer' grade lenses do not produce optimal results on DSLR's. It might be ok for your holiday snapshots, but if you consider photography seriously, you won't put cheap glass in front of your camera, but rather go the L, EX, DG, AT-X (or whatever ) route. So the lenses I own now would perform poorly on a Nikon DSLR anyway (with the exception of the 1.8/50)

So early next year I will get the 20D and not look a second time at the D70. I was pretty much set on the 10D or Kodak DCS 560, but when I postponed the date for the changeover, the 20D was announced and it has just so much more to offer than the 10D, 300D, D70 or D100. (resolution, clean 3200 ISO, ETTL-2)
