I can't ID water birds and not too good with hawks either so posting here in hopes that someone will be able to ID them.

Is this a wilson's snipe?

And is this a sharp-shinned hawk?

That hawk has a nice little story that goes with him. I just got the Canon 500L this past Friday, but didn't get a chance to use it until Saturday. I was at my mom's house standing on the covered front porch shooting goldfinches, pine siskins and trying to get the cedar waxwing in the bird bath. All of a sudden everything flew. I'm standing there holding the 500 waiting on all of them to come back when out of no where a small bird and trailing hawk come up on the porch with me. I'm turning around in circles trying to keep both of them out of the front element. The small bird got away and the hawk landed across the street in a tree where I got that picture of him. After I got a few pictures, I'm wondering how did I manage not to keep either of them from flying into the lens and how did I keep from dropping it during that event. After that I get the tripod as my arms were gave out.

Please let me know if the links don't work as I've had some trouble with posting pictures from zenfolio.

I would say the first one is definitely a Wilson's snipe, the second I don't know, not being particularly good at the hawks. Both nice captures though :D

Could you estimate the height of the hawk? 11" would place it in the SS category, where as 16" would place it in the Coop category.

I find that size is not a good way to determine between Coop's and Sharpies, there is often a lot of overlap. Male Coop's and female Sharpies are just about the same size.
That said, going by overall proprtions, your hawk seems to have a relatively small head, and looks pretty slender. Also, the legs are very thin, almost toothpick like. Your bird, then, is a juvenile Sharp-shinned Hawk.

I thought it looked fairly big billed and the head size may be due to the angle its looking, my gut reaction was Cooper's but as its on your side of the pond am willing to bow to greater experience !
