What programs can be used to create a JPG from a RAW?

I have never taken any RAW pictures. So, that said, I've never tried to create a JPG from a RAW file. Which programs out there can do this?

What came in the box?

The Canon software that came in the box can handle it. I think that's why it's there. There are others but it's good enough to see what RAW can do for you.

Once you go RAW, you won't go back...

Some image editor programs will convert RAW to anything else, sometimes using SAVE AS and sometimes CONVERT TO.

I use a Canon utility to convert RAW to TIF. Then I read the TIF file with my image editor, edit, and save it as TIF to maintain complete detail. Later, if I need to publish it to the web, I convert the TIF to JPEG, but I keep the TIF.

I also keep the RAW files and archive them separately. So, when all of the smoke clears, I have spindles of CD-ROMs full of RAW files. Then I have spindles of DVD+RWs full of TIF files as backup to multiple hard disks full of the same TIF files. Then there is a small collection of JPEGs.

Well, back in my D30 days, the Canon software was a total piece of junk and I abandoned it and went with BreezeBrowser. It had a better RAW conversion algorithym, and was the best available at the time. I assume Canon has made theirs better and although I have upgraded cameras I never even loaded the Canon software. There are other companies creating conversion software and I do not know if BreezeBroswer is still considered one of the best.

I like it a lot because I can view all my RAW images full-size on the screen so I only waste time converting the ones I like. It has a good a histogram view and makes it very easy to do exposure and white balance adjustments during the conversion. My Canon software use to force me to use a white reference picture for white balance correction. With BreezeBrowser I just move the mouse over a white point in the picture and use that for correction with preview. It also has a couple of other algorithms and noise filtering capability built in that are useful...oh and the conversion time was much faster than my old Canon software. They have improved on the algorithm overtime and so I have reconverted some images years later after downloading an upgrade.

I use C1 and Photoshop CS. I prefer photoshop, c1's menus and layout bites total....

Is there any way to retain the exif data when you take raw shots? I really like having that on the jpg, and losing it would be the main reason i'd stick with jpg.
