Canoga is listing their selling price, not MSRP.

but have they historically listed their selling price or MSRP for pre-orders (actually, this question would go for any store doing pre-orders for this right now)? If they indeed are selling prices, I will be sadly disappointed. Even if it were significantly better... but that's me, I vowed to try and keep my lens purchases under $500 if I could help it, heh. Still very curious as to its performance though. So hopefully they get out soon

For me on a 5D I would happily pay $500 for a FF 50mm that is IQ wise equivelent to the 30mm 1.4.I am intending this being my main lens and so if the quality is there then the amount of use it will get makes $500 decent value. I've had two Canon 50mm 1.4's and good enough lens but I'm not itchin' to get another. The wow factor, build, MF feel isn't there.

given the below factors are true, i will seriously consider the Sigma:

- faster AF than the EF50/1.4
- sharper wide open than the EF50/1.4
- other factors being equal or better than the EF50/1.4
- below $450 or so

the Sigma is head to head competing with the canon f/1.4. it needs to be better than the canon in a few dept in order to command and higher selling price.

they charge quite a lot for the 30/1.4, mostly because there are little competition from canon. yes, there is the 28/1.8, but that's slower and most ppl have issues with the IQ.

this time around, there are competitive alternatives, 50/1.4 being the closest, and even the 50/1.8 is not far away for a much lower price.

so Sigma better has some secret under it sleeves otherwise i doubt anybody will shell out more than $150 for a similar quality lens.

If it's equal on all accounts of the Canon only with better AF I would pay 500 for it.

A bit off topic but wouldn't the 30 f/1.4 be somewhat comparable to the 35 f/1.4L?

I know it's a 5mm difference but given that the 35L is over $1000 wouldn't the Sigma 30 be a steal at over less than half the price?

I bought the sigma 30 with the 35 in mind. I know the 35 probably is optically better but it's hard to beat the image quality produced by the 30 for its given price.

I'm hoping the Sigma 50 will do the same!

Before the new Sigma fisheyes were released Canoga showed their sale price and not the MSRP.

Well as the 35 is full frame I don't think it's a fair comparison.

I don't think the sigma 30f/1.4 can't touch the 35L. As a matter of fact few lenses can't...;)

If it has color rendtion, IQ, and build quality nearing the 1.2L, I'll pay $500 for 1/3 less of a stop, no problem.

Ok...Mr LR...the 35L is out of the 30f/1.4 leagues. Granted, the sigma is nice, but it does not have the 35L corner to corner sharpness among other things.

I think LR may have been referring to your grammar:

Actually, the online tests (I know, I know not the end all be all) indicate that the Sigma 30 1.4 isn't that far off from the 35L when it comes to sharpness. Color and corner sharpness is where it suffers, but only marginally.

The problem with the 30 1.4, and many Sigma lenses if you pay attention to all the complaints on forum like this, is consistent build quality.

You may get a nice 50/1.4 or 30/1.4, but how many returns to the factory for recalibration will it take?

All true, my 28f/1.8 and 50f/1.4 took 2-3 trips to canon to have them ready to slice sushi. The thing is that you might need good corner sharpness and if the lens does not delivers it -- regardless of calibration -- your shots will no be usable. I was doing some full body studio shots with my 28f/1.8 @f11 and the corners (head and toes came out REALLY soft.) The shots with the 50f/1.4 @f11 came out tack sharp -- different animals.

The 35L is one of canon's finest...
