Its a great lens, not very fast for focusing because you have to make it focus... so its not action but for portraits in lowlights its great, if you have a bit of time that is... rendering is superb. mines a keeper until i find about 700 euros lying around and get the L

edit I would never with my copy put it AI Servo, that would be a lottery... need to check the focus before pressing fully....

When it first came out I thought eveyone was saying the focus was very fast.

It focuses pretty fast - almost as fast as my Canon 50mm f/1.4. However, that ring HSM motor has work a bit harder than Canon's micro USM motor because the glass is so much bigger. ;)

I also hoped it would focus faster and better than my Canon lens but that is not what I found, it's if anything a bit slower, it's less precise and it searches a bit. To me the things it has going for it is slightly better sharpness f/1.4 to f/2, better bokeh and better build. The Canon lens equals or betters it in all other areas including price.

Yeah, but only at f/1.4-f/1.6. It's CA, and no amount of Irvine Love (TM) will fix it. It's going up for sale soon.

Hi guys. How is the AF consistency on your copies of this lens? If you take a few shots of the same subject with camera on tripod and re-focus before each shot, does focus shift around? Assuming lens has no back/front focus.

the copy i got was the most unreliable thing I've ever tried. even worse than the sigma 30mm i had before.. it improved somewhat after finding the right amount of microfocusadjustment (+8) but it was still nowhere near being reliable enough.. focusing on a book that covered the entire fov and was perfectly parallell to the sensor, gave me a keeper-rate of less than 50%.. so I sold it -only had it for 6 days :p. Picked up the Canon 50/1.4 yesterday instead and the AF performs just as one would expect (what a relief..!)

Cleaned the mirror area on my 5d2 with a blower, and AF inconsistencies disappeared.

Deciding between this or the canon 1.4 I'm on a 6d and currently am using a canon 1.8 for portraits

it makes more sense to start a new thread than to reply to one that is 6 years old...do a search, and you'll see many comparisons between the two f1.4's
