RC Hobby shops have the greatest foam in sheets.
It's primary use is to protect vitals on vertical landings at Mach-II.

Don't be slicing sections out of your memory foam mattress.

Ben - I am very near now to ordering the 1624 but want to get everything in one hit, have you ordered the lid organizer yet? If yes what are you using as a seperater between the main storage area and the lid organizer is there something you can order?

No, I never did order the lid organizer, I just never needed the extra compartments. But if I ever did I was literally just going to use a foam sheet with perhaps a soft fabric wrapped around it as the separator.

Possibly the better choice from Pelican:
Custom top lid section just for laptop/Mac example shown.

Yes thats pretty cool if your carrying your gear around in a pelican case and have a laptop that you want to bring with you, but I neither take this case out of my house, ever, nor do I own a laptop that I would take with me for photography purposes. I think that type of lid accessory is best suited for a more portable pelican case like say the 1514.

That is cool but for practical purposes, even if I was going to carry the 1624 with me somewhere, I prefer to have my laptop with/on me on the plane, in the car, in the train where the case wouldn't be except for the luggage area, which usually you won't be able to get too.

Not sure if that case fitted for lap is sized for on-board carry on, but on my journeys, trains, planes, etc, I never put any gear in cargo.
I was line A&P mechanic for major airlines where I monitor everything while the ship is prepped for the next flight, and cargo handlers damage more than just baggage.

With the way bags are thrown (as if it was a UPS semi truck) into cargo bay, it has damaged cargo bay interior blow out panels to lighting. Then I have to repair it.
After cargo is unloaded, I'd inspect ship for damage and then sweep out a pile of baggage hardware.

Some bags have tumbled out the door, 15 feet to tarmac.
Even a pelican after a fall like that would subject gear to severe shock.
I'd stand inside cargo bay at times to monitor the action.
Wasn't my job, but I wanted to know why the damage repeatedly. And at 30 below zero, you have better things to do. You can't be there all the time.

If forced to, Like I have in the past, then bag would go inside larger softside bag to be padded again. More important if there are connecting flights. It will be thrown at least 6 more times till you see it on the turnstile. I try to time things so my bag is near the top of the pile vs the bottom.

Otherwise,
If it can't go on board with me, it stays home.
So if this case is legal carry on, then I'd unload laptop, and throw case in overhead.
For sure on the 7 + hours to Europe. Domestic, I wouldn't bother taking laptop out.
I'd grab a camera instead if at window seat.

I actually do my post processing on my laptop during a train ride throughout Europe.. Although I get distracted a lot. 9 out of 10 times, I just enjoy the view, post process because taking photos through the window is not too pleasing.

Although, I do take out my G9 and snap away for memories sake.

Yep! The 1624 AND the 1514 is the killer combo! Superior home storage AND superior travel storage!

Don't know why you'd need to buy anything - you still get the foam inside the lid when you order a lid organizer separately - just use that! (Cut off the egg-crate spikes if you find there isn't enough room).

Actually, thats a great idea. My only concern with that is what if I for some reason end up not liking the lid organizer and want to go back to just the top lid foam. IF I had to modify it for any reason I wouldnt be able to. Though Im sure i would know right off the bat whether or not Im going to keep it... The other thing is that top foam is pretty thick and might be TOO thick even with the spikes cut off... I dont know, if I ever order the lid organizer Ill have to play with the options and see. When I do though I will be sure to post my findings here.

Failing that, high density foam is easily and cheaply bought pretty much anywhere. They'll even cut it to size for you. :)

My lid organizer on my 1624 fits just fine even with the original top lid foam with the eggcrate bottom.

Thank you so much for this review. I've read it through several times and I went ahead and ordered a Pelican 1624 OD (Olive Drab), and decided against the lid organizer. I won't receive the case for another few days (BandH), however I saw it in a store yesterday and I was so disappointed that the handle wasn't as comfortable as other Pelican models. The lower (15XX) models have a rubberized piece that makes the grip more comfortable and bigger. On the 1624, there is just the hard plastic (thin) along with the ridges that make the grip unpleasant. Oh well. I know it's a heavy beast and that I'm not going to be carrying it, like you would on the smaller versions - but still. My purpose is primarily for home storage, and taking all of my gear on a trip, in the trunk of the car.
