now why would they bother updating this camera if they plan to replace it soon, this lends me to believe there will be no 5D successor anytime soon.

As much as I believe that there won't be a successor, this makes no sense. The 30D has ALREADY been updated...but they still just released a firmware update. Companies don't stop supporting and updating old stuff just because new stuff is out or is going to be released.

Here ya go... not that you want to install 'my version' but you can compare the filesizes on your system. I would guess that block size your drive is partitioned with might make the difference...

Thanks. It was the same 5,082 KB as the one I had downloaded so perhaps it's my computer's way of looking at files. Anyway I installed it and it works fine. Thank you.

Updating as we speak. It'll be nice to have lens data in DPP for the 16-35 II.

I'm no expert in this area, but I think you have to multiply 5082 by 1024 to convert from KB to Bytes. 5028 X 1024, gets you more like, 5,203,968.

I also think you have to account for some round up or round down.

My file say 5.08MB. Then the unzipped .fir file says 4.96 MB (5,202,420 bytes).

why? just because canon releases newer cameras doesnt mean the old ones just dissapear, there will still be loads of people using the 5d mkI and thus will need big cf card support.

I'm guessing that they have only recently become aware of the 'issue' with 8Gb or bigger cards because more people are buying them. This is because confidence has grown in using them and the price has come right down making them more desirable. More people use them so more people find out about a problem and the feedback gets back to Canon who have a reputation to protect so they bring out a fix. Just like widows XP updates are still released despite Vista being the new kid on the block.

Just as someone else already said in this thread.... Canon also released a similar update to the 30D, which has already been replaced. I don't think this has any bearing on a 5D replacement one was or another.

I updated mine. No problem. - Just make sure your battery is fully charged. It does take a few minutes and if it shuts off during the upgrade I would assume it's possible it could hose the electronics of the camera.

At least I know that if you upgrade the BIOS of a computer and it turns off during the process it could render the motherboard unusable.
