so many choices...

i am more confused by the numerous posts about these products.

some prefer the Epson, some the Canon, then some swear by the Digital Foci and
others are die hards of Wolverine, Vosonic and Jobo.

how would you rate them by features/specs/price and image quality?

any ideas?

update: i think i have just found what im looking for!

Cowon Q5W (external link)

it has wifi
bluetooth
windows ce operating system
800x480 pixel resolution @ 16million colors
5 inch display
touch screen!
GPS!
can play diff video, audio and photo codecs including RAW from canon

supported RAW formats (external link)

usb 2.0 host (can connect usb thumb drives or usb hdd enclosures with power supply, keyboard, mouse, etc)
ms office files viewer
battery life 13 hrs for audio/7 hrs for video 9i dont know about photo but i think its more than the 13 hrs for audio!)
can play flash from diffrent websites such as youtube

i will visit the store tomorrow to confirm that it is UTG (usb on the go) wherein you can actually transfer the files from the camera (40D) directly to the unit by just a usb cable.

if that is possible, i am gonna buy this thing definitely.

it is more than what the epson can do and it is definitely a subsitute for the laptop!

Hi,

Can't really compare to others but I own the Epson 5000 and I am very happy with it.

I think all the devices offer more or less the same functionality, but the Epson is the best screen I have seen so far.

Also the battery lasts a long time, I was going to buy a second battery and there is no need after all.

Note: The Canon M-80 is only available in Europe.

If your tech savvy get the Epson P3000 with the $150 in mail rebates then change out the hard drive to 120 gig one.

Before considering any PSD, I would suggest you decide what are the important factors you want in one. For me, I want a device that reliably and quickly backs up my data. In addition, the PSD has to hold a charge and be easy to download to my PC. Replaceable HD and battery are also important. The viewing screen is important but not primary. With these requirements I bought a Colorspace from hyperspace.com.

I have the old P-2000, but should have gotten the P-3000 is around $260 with the $150 rebate, so well worth it. What I like about the Epson is that the CF or SD cards go right into it to download. The controls are easy to maneuver and the 3.7? inch screen is beautiful. So, when I can't seem to get it right looking on the camera LCD, the larger view is much more defined and really can see details. Also, if I am showing people a series of shots from maybe one event, the albums are easy to get to. You can even look at only the pictures on a CF card, for instance, and not have to download all the images. The 40 GB is actually more like 35 that are free for downloading, but other than that, it's quite a good little tool if you can't take the laptop with you.

I was going to say the same. For me the deciding factor was the fact that I could get a P-3000 for $250 after rebate AND put a 120GB hard drive in it!

Another thing to note is tell us what you will be doing with these devices?

There are advantages and disadvantages between all of them. Better screen resolutions, transfer speeds, etc.. etc..

By letting us know what it is you are trying to achieve with having one of these devices, we can probably gear you towards the "better" device for your specific use.

It should not be forgotten about shooting RAW and transferring to these units, that the unit must support the RAW display for your camera model, if you want to view the images. The P3000 supports...EOS 5D, D30, D60, 10D, Digital Rebel, Digital Rebel XT, Digital Rebel XTi, 1D Mark II, 1Ds Mark II, 1D Mark II N, 20D, 30D

Add the EOS 40D to that list too and I'd expect the new Mark III's also. Its reading the embedded JPEG is all. Its my understanding that the Epson is the only one that does this.

The Epson site does not mention 40D in its web site information about the P3000 or P5000. So just how does either unit handle RAW for that camera...read in the RAW file but unable to display it, or simply dig out the embedded JPG from within?

Anyone, who OWNS a 40D, could describe the behavior for us?

I own the 40D and it works the exact same as with the 30D I had. I did update the firmware to the most recent a while back but it works fine.

I just contacted Epson support in USA. Officially they do NOT support the 40D yet, but he did a search thru Epson worldwide and found that Epson Australia does indeed list the 40D as a supported camera.

It would nevertheless be good to get confirmation of that fact from a real 40D owner.

[edit] I see that tsmith does confirm proper operation!

40D works. No updates on my end.

The Colorspace reads RAW as well as the embedded jpegs.
