How about a relatively cheap $450-500 14in/160GB/2GB RAM/DVD-RW/DL/5.4lb laptop.

that's probably the best solution if weight isn't an issue.

Weight should not be an issue:

* You only need these fancy PSD type of solutions when you run out of CF cards or want to swap them out. Get something cheap like the FlashPac 7000.

* You don't need to lug your laptop around. If you are living in a decent hotel you can leave it there. Or in your car. If you don't have a car/hotel or don't trust either then you have to carry it.

*Even with an Epson P-5000 you can only view the images. With a laptop running CS2/3 you can actually store/view/edit/burn images.

*Plus you can always post on POTN from where ever you are if you have an internet connection.

I wonder how long I have to hang out on POTN before I get as good as Ansel Adams ?

weight is an issue for me because i'm going to africa and i'm only allowed 15 lbs carry-on on the private flights. also, in africa i won't be logging onto the internet :D.

normally i take my laptop when i travel....but this is an exception.

Wow 15lbs is tight. The 1Ds Mk.III body comes in at 3.1lbs that leaves you less than 12lbs for lens, charger, other photography stuff AND your personal articles. You got bigger problem than fitting a 1lb Epson P-3000

Has anybody mentioned the Hyperdrive ColorSpace yet? I am a big believer in double backup so I have two (160 gb and 250 gb). My wife and I are off to Alaska (our second time) this summer for two weeks. I don't own a laptop and to be honest I would rather take more camera equipment in lieu of a laptop.

I may swap out the 160 gb drive for a 250 gb as this is an easy task with the Hyperdive units. You can even buy the unit ($149) with no drive and put in the make and capacity of your choice.

Hyperdrives are avaialble with or without a picture view screen. The ColorSpace model has a view screen. I like to be able to actually check that my photos are "in there". The view screen image isn't up to the quality or size of the Epson models but for a quick check of your images it's very good.

Down loading from memory cards is relatively quick with the Hyperdirve; certainly faster than my old Epson P2000.

Here's a link to the Hyperdrive website: www.hyperdrive.com (external link)

Ken

Gear: A bunch of Canon stuff and a bunch of old Olympus 35 mm stuff (OM-1, OM-2, etc).

15 lbs. is just for carry-on. i can also check a 25 lb. bag. my wife can also carry on some gear if i can somehow get her not to overpack :D.

Yup, Air New Zealand and Qantas both have the 7.5 kg carry-on limit, too, strictly enforced!

i hadn't thought of that. i'm not sure what the carry-on limit is to south africa on the commercial flight but i know the private jets that we take between parks have the 15 lb. limit.

ok, to confuse me a little more,

i have found this one which looks like a promising alternative to the epson p3000.

its the Creative Zen Vision W.
it also accepts CF cards and has a higher resolution (640x4800) but
the number of colors is only 262K.

what do you think?

btw, i went check the p3000 today and i think its quite bulky! i mean, its bigger than i anticipated.

I am almost positive that the Zen doesn't allow you to preview RAW files. JPEGS yes but not the RAW's. That alone was the main reason for going with the Epson and of course that beautiful screen.

That zen is pretty sleek looking :) But if no preview for RAW it would be useless to me.

I have the P-3000 and I love it! Even though it's a bit bulky, it beats carrying a laptop when traveling. Of course, I don't have a need for a laptop unless it's work related.

ok, how about this?

Cowon Q5W (external link)

it plays RAW files and Canon dslr's are supported.
the thing is that it doesnt have a CF slot but is has USB port to connect the 40D (for
example) directly. it also has wi-fi and ms office viewer.

so far, the top of the list for me is the epson as well but, its quite hard to swallow the price considering that it doesnt have any extra feature such as wifi and web browsing.
