ok, i have finally bought a storage device.Asus R2H UMPC ...............

That's beuuuuuuutiful, please let us know how it works out for you. A full function UMPC might be the next logical evolution of photo storage devices.

Although if you want the kitchen sink you should be looking at the HTC shift.

I wonder how long I have to hang out on POTN before I get as good as Ansel Adams ?

with UPS it's always a crapshoot....:D.

well i got the epson P3000 today and my first impression is very favorable.

-- build is excellent*

Of course, definitely excellent!

-- controls are simple and intuitive*

It's as simple as it gets. Although reading the manual once or twice does give you better insight as the labelling of the buttons is not all that clear. However, with some common sense, it all falls into place.

-- LCD is fantastic*

One of the number one reason why this device is a better choice than most out there. Although the Hyperspace Color one is looking nice considering it's fast transfer speeds. Then again, I carry so many CF cards that speed isn't really an issue for me.

-- 40-gig capacity is a bit light *

Do the upgrade. I have 120 GIG on mine. There is a tutorial here on POTN or go directly here. (external link)

-- downloading RAW files from a CF card seems slow

Same as my comments above regarding speed transfer. It's fast enough for me....

1) how long does a battery last?

It depends on use. But here is a good link where we debated this in the past and the introduction to the upgrade for the device.

2) are the ebay batteries okay....from who?

Buy from Sterlingtek...although I did but from eBay that came with a charger. It's good enough. Come to think of it, I can't recall whether sterlingtek carries it but I'm sure they do. Too lazy to check myself.

3) i imagine i can use the unit as a battery charger, rather than buying another charger?

Check ebay, they usually bundle it with batteries. Using the device to charge your battery is always an option but it comes down not being able to use the device...untethered.

4) how long does the epson P3000 take to download an 8-gig card?

Read and go through that link I sent above. It should get you started as a baseline.

overall i really like the epson P3000....i like it MUCH better than the digital foci porter elite that i sold except the digital porter had a 120-gig hard drive.

okay i have a few questions..........

1) how long does a battery last?

2) are the ebay batteries okay....from who?

3) i imagine i can use the unit as a battery charger, rather than buying another charger?

* unlike the digital foci porter elite....

I believe it uses the same battery as one of the play stations. I also think you can get those and the charger from sterlingtek. Also, the wall charger for the sony psp works for this as well as charging with a USB cable designed for the same.

At any rate, take the battery from the EPson and do a search for the epson part number (EU-97) on ebay. You will find quite a number of people making that battery going for something like $10. I bought one, it works fine, plus a psp power adaptor which also works fine. So does this:

http://www.boxwave.com …tion-portable-psp_556.htm (external link)

I have this charger:
http://cgi.ebay.com …ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (external link)

Works great and charges in a car too.

Thanks!

The cost of the upgrade is essentially the cheapest you can buy online or retail at a store.

It's a regular SATA hd's that are in laptops.

If you have an imaging software already then you're set. Otherwise, you may have to buy an imaging software or *ahem*, if you know what I mean. However the one in the tutorial talks about using Acronis (external link).

It's obviously easier to follow the instructions if you have that software but any imaging software will do. You just need to know where the settings are for that application.

On the other hand, it's easy peasy to do. Worst case scenario, you revert back to the other one but you can keep trying lol. Although it's easy peasy. Did I say it's easy peasy already? Oh yeah, it's easy peasy to do.

According to the directions, it is a parallel interface hence a PATA drive.

My mistake, I mistook it actually for my laptop. I had an 80 Gig HD laying around that was SATA and when I had to ship my tablet pc back to HP for repairs, I had to take out my SATA HD out instead of backing it up and I think that is what I was thinking off. Yes, follow the directions.

I'm going to buy an Epson P5000 - I don't feel comfortable pulling a P3000 apart, and 80gb should be large enough for what I need.

I just have one question though, and I guess I could find out from the Epson site, but ahh well. Here goes:

Can the P5000 be used as an MP3 player? Does it have a headphone jack? Or is it simply a storage device?

Thanks in advance:)

It can be used as such, however, battery life isn't the best in the world with this device. As I have stated all these different devices out there similar to this has it's pro's and con's. Pro being it's amazing, outstanding screen. Con being it's battery life. Nevertheless, I don't consider it too much of an issue when you have extra batteries. Then again, I don't hammer it as much as I would on my iTouch that is constantly on.

I only perform image transfers from my CF/SD cards and slight viewing on it when I need to and the battery would easily get depleted.
