Pardon the ignorance...but am I doing this right? I upload my RAWS to my pc, then when I open them, they automatically open in Camera Raw 4.0(whichI am new to).In Camera Raw I adjusted for white balance, then clicked on open file, which then opens it in CS3 (I think those changes are imported into CS3?) In CS3 I adjusted the exposure and added a USM. Then, somewhat pleased, I tried to save as a Jpeg...but when I opened the Jpeg up, the adjustments I made were not there. It looked like the original again..I am pretty sure I have done this before and the changes were kept in the new JPEG file, but I could be wrong..Am I doing something wrong? I am new to RAW, just recently made the switch from shooting JPEG. Also, I have Lightroom, should I use this instead of Camera Raw 4.0? thanks

You are doing it correctly from what I understand because that happens to me too but only once in a while..sometimes the changes I make are not there and I have to go back to do them all over again and then they are saved..UNTIL I open them again maybe a month later and the changes are gone again. It has to be a CS3 glitch..I'm a jpeg shooter but I shot some raw this weekend of our state spelling bee and to see if it has changed my opinion on raw but no it didn't..I show raw + jpeg and there was no difference in any of the images so I'm leaving raw for good. You can work on jpgs in the raw editor anyway so why shoot raw....but yeah, I've experienced the same as you and I think it is a Cs3 glitch unless someone else can come up with a better reason why it happens.

Ok this is frustrating...I am working on one particular photo. and can't get the changes to appear in my JPEG. I have tried 3 or 4 times now to save them, but still the unchanged version appears when I open the newly saved JPEG..

I haven't ever seen that type of behavior. Please provide a step by step description of how you're saving the image after it's been opened in CS3.

It has to be a CS3 glitch.

Given the number of people using this application and the fact that there doesn't seem to be a groundswell of protest to Adobe on any of the forums about this issue, this is highly unlikely unless it's an issue with your installation of CS3. Not impossible, just unlikely. ;)

When you open up the picture again in CS3 are the changes you made there again and not in the fax/picture viewer in XP?

What I believe you need to do is convert it to sRGB before you save the file into a jpg

Not true. sRGB is just the color space and you can save a JPEG in another color space if you'd like. You will however have muddy looking colors if you try to view a JPEG in say IE Explorer if it's in the Adobe RGB color space.

Ah ha! Yes indeed, in the fax/picture viewer there are not there...but when I opened the JPEG in CS3 instead, they were indeed there. I have never converted pics in the past, just used the "save as" option and selected JPEG. This is not the proper was I am assuming..although I did it like this in the past, and my adjustments were viewable in the windows fax/picture viewer. Makes me wonder why then but not now..anywhoo, how do i convert it to sRGB (what exactly is that) before saving..? thanks

Would you please post the image you're referring to or a link to it so we can take a look at it.

Are you sure you are opening the right jpg and not another file with the same name?
(for instance if you shot raw + jpg)

Don't rely on windows picture and fax viewer. It's not color managed for starters.
Have a read in the link from my sig.

Alright here it goes..I hope this works.
Here's the JPEG I saved from CS3, after I made adjustments (the photo that when opened in windows fax/picture view, doesn't show adjustments made):

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

and here is the screenshot of the same photo in CS3, I hope you can see the adjustments in this..I didn't know how else to show a photoshop file in the forum..:
IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

Bear with me here...I know its hard to see the difference, but the I adjusted the white balance, and some sharpening in CS3, you can tell in the white shirt and the green canopy and wood in the background (i hope)..

Good points.. Yes they are different JPEGS, cuz I rename them from the index# out of the cam to a more user friendly description of the photo (dogpic1 instead of img 1221 for example)

And yes, I think the windows fax/pic is the culprit, but it still puzzles me to as why before I could see the changes I made using that program..I only use it to quickly preview a photo, not to edit or anything...Actually now that I look more closely, the JPEGs are actually opening with my Nero PhotoSnap Viewer, which probably isn't much better than the windows viewer..Either way, the changes aren't shown in either..

EDIT: Alright, I am now leaning towards the culprit being the Adobe Camer Raw Program..I used Lightroom this time, and made some changes there first (exposure, and an action), then plugged into CS3 and sharpened and adjusted a bit more to my taste. Then I saved as JPEG once again, only this time I can see the adjustments I made viewing in the general photo viewer on my pc.. heres the new jpeg:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Byte size: ZERO | PHOTOBUCKET ERROR IMAGE

I'm having trouble discerning your changes, but that's probably due to the fact that I'm viewing this on an old laptop instead of my monitor at home. Take a look at René's Color Problems link - it has a lot of very useful information.

I think we can pretty much rule out your original assumption that CS3 was just not saving your changes, right?
