I got my Epson p3000 yesterday and it claims to play .avi files. It won't play .avi files from my Powershot G9 but it will play the .avi file that comes as a sample with the unit.

Anybody know why it won't play my .avi movie files from the G9?

Thanks.

Thats weird. They play on my P3000 from my G9. What firmware version do you have on your device? I have the latest, 1.20, and the videos I shot this weekend work fine with it.

Canon 1DMKIII, 7D w/WFT-E5A, 40D modded with Baader filter, Celestron CPC1100, Astro-Tech AT8RC on a Celestron CGEM, some fast lenses, and some tripods...

1.10.01. That's what it shipped with. Maybe that explains it. I'll update the firmware today and see what happens. Thanks!

Ok, I updated to 1.2 but no luck. It still shows the videos with a "?" and says it's either corrupt or something else. I've emailed Epson to see what's wrong.

Doug have you tried doing another test video, maybe on a different memory card to verify if the file isn't actually corrupted?

I'll try that tonight, however, I can successfully download images & video from the cards to my computer and they're viewable & playable. I just spoke with Epson and they want me to try to download other avi's & mpeg's to the unit and try them out. If they don't play, there may be a problem with the viewer. It's strange though that it will play the .avi file that came preloaded as a sample.

He asked me what resolution the videos are & I told him the G9's specs on high quality. It's >1000 x 700 something. Is anyone else using the high quality video & is it playing on the Epson?

Thanks.

I have a G9 and the high quality AVI is recorded at 1024x768 (as opposed to standard quality AVI recorded at 640x480). I dont have a p3000 but are you experiencing issues with both qualities of avi, or just the high quality one?

Are you sure you're going after the right file. I just shot a video with my G9 and there are two files created. One is the actual AVI file which my P3000 can play and the other is the THM (thumbnail) file for the movie which the P3000 will not play. Both the AVI file and the THM file have the same name except that the extension names are different.

Ok, here's what I found out after spending about 30 minutes with an Epson Support Tech. Let me know if this sounds right to you (everyone in the thread).

To make a long story short, the Epson's max resolution for playing .avi files is 640x480. While I was on the phone with tech support, I recorded a short video on the G9 at it's 640x480 resolution setting, copied it to the P3000 and it worked. So, it sounds like the P3000 will never be able to play any avi files with resolution greater than 640x480, however, it will of course download them for later transfer to computer.

Does that sound right?

On another note, I tried transferring an avi file I downloaded from the internet at 640x480 but it wouldn't play. The P3000 said it didn't have the right codec.

Are you recording at high resolution with the G9, 1024x768?

No, I was recording it at 640x480. When I tried it in the high resolution mode (didn't even know about it or how to get at it until I fiddled with the camera for a while...it's my wife's camera), the P3000 wouldn't play it.

According to the P3000 manual, the highest resolution it'll handle is 720x576 with a file size no larger than 2 GB.

Thanks. That was it. Too bad it won't play the higher res. I'd like to review them on the Epson. Oh well. I'll just have to wait until they're tranferred to the laptop.

Just out of curiosity, what are you using the high res video for? It only shoots at 15 fps so I'm not sure what it's buying you other than a larger image but with jerky motion.
