... with a point and shoot canon ? love to know what wide or fisheye lens is necessary. When I have tried this kind of thing before I just get a black circle around the image creating unwelcome corners.

There are 2 types of fisheye lenses, one is full circle [180 degree whole directions], and another is just diagonal 180 degree, Sigma and Peleng 8 are full circle fisheye, and Canon and Sigma 15mm are diagonal fishy.
I think this pic is taken by somehow a diagonal fisheye lens.
Go and check 15mm fisheye lens sample images and see if they are very similar to this shot in your link above.

However, this is a DSLR lens. Can you get this type of fisheye with screwthread attachment for a point n shoot, or is there some way of attaching a lens like this to a point n shoot ?

Right now it's looking like you have to have a DSLR in order to take such pics.

There are screw-on fisheye adapters like there are screwin wide angle adapters; for that matter some of the cheap ultrawide adapters have enough barrel distortion you could use them as fisheyes.

Yeah i've been doing that by taking the macro correction lens off, but if you zoom in, you clear out the corners but almost loose the fish effect, plus it blurs a bit. That said - just found this....

Raynox DCR-CF185PRO 185-DEGREE Circular Fisheye Conversion Lens For Canon PowerShot

'' Available Since: Jan 15, 2008 '' so - yeah - BRAND NEW STUFF TO PLAY WITH!!

The blurb says:

A fabulous 185-degree Circular Fisheye conversion lens was introduced from Raynox, called DCR-CF185PRO. Once again, Raynox filled the need of advanced image creators. Upon mounting on the zoom lens, it opens the field of view to the ultra wide angle, the diagonal fisheye angle and to the circular fisheye images. A very interesting feature of this particular lens makes it possible to change the scenery from an ultra wide angle view to a diagonal fisheye and to the circular fisheye or?the other way, by zooming the lens. An adapter ring RA6258 for 58mm filter size and a RA6252 for 52mm filter size are included with DCR-CF185PRO Fish-Eye lens.

Love the ASIN code on Amazon.co.uk .... ''B000B5'' - W00T !!! - and thanks for the heads up info Tareq.

(EDIT)
Hmm .... google image search found this ...
