I hope that this is the right place to post this question as I am very new to this forum but it seems like you have a lot of very knowledgeable people here.

In 3 weeks I will be going to the NHRA Summit Nationals at the Strip in Las Vegas and would like some suggestions for lenses.

This is my second trip there, last year I took a bunch of pictures using a Tamron 28-300 lens which was way too slow and after looking at all of the pictures I realized that they were all shot in the 50-100mm range but would like to have more of a range if at all possible.

I was considering the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 to use with my Canon 30D body.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know much about the Sigma 50-150f2.8 but i do know the Sigma 70-200F2.8 APO Macro is pretty sharp and fast and before every one chimes in on this i agree the Canon is a better lens but not by a lot and pretty well priced....This would arguably be one of Sigma best lenses..

Ok i jsu notice you have a Canon 70-200 IS so forget what i just said..

I just picked up the 70-200 F/4L but haven't even put it on my camera yet. At the same time I will be in the same seats as last year so I will need to have a lens that goes down to at least 50mm.

Will the f/4 be enough? If so then I also picked up the 24-105 f/4L IS which might be my best bet. I thought I would need a 2.8 for the night shots from the stands.

I have used a 70-200 F4, and other lenses, at the drags and while F4 is ok for twilight it is not much good when it really gets dark, expect a lot of failures. If you can get a F2.8 lens then do so.

Here is an example, one of the better ones, shot at F5 (1/160 sec) with a Canon 70-300 IS lens @ 170mm with Canon 40D at ISO 1600.
It has had lots of postwork to make it half decent.

Thank you for the reply... I had some good pictures from last years race but they had a ton of noise. This is why I am looking for something new... I thought that my 24-105 f/4 IS would be good but from what I am seeing / hearing I think that will not be the best lens for it.

Any suggestions for a good f/2.8 lens? As I mentioned I was thinking about the Sigma 50-150 but might be getting a 5d this summer and this lens would not work on that.
