yes. with 2.8 variant you can use both 1.4x and 2x and retain autofocus on all bodies. with f4 variant you can retain autofocus only with 1d series cameras. you will have considerable image degradation with 2x, but both will work well with 1.4x

Minimum apertures are effected by the addition of a TC.

F/2.8 + 1.4xTC = F/4
F/2.8 + 2xTC = F/5.6
F/4 + 1.4xTC = F/5.6
F/4 + 2xTC = F/8

But you probably knew that anyway - huh? :)

To clarify, this post was correct about either TC with the 2.8, but wasn't clear about the f/4 lens: you CAN use the 1.4x TC on any Canon body and keep autofocus.

Yes but you wouldn't really want to.

You'd get away with the 1.4x but the 2x makes this already soft lens mush.

I'd call that a bit of an exaggeration...

I'm considering the 1.4x for some extra reach but would never consider my 70-200 f4L IS "soft".

Soft Lens??....are you joking or just living up to your profile that states you love "**** on public forums"??

I agree...except I'd call it a great exaggeration...

the 70-200 f4IS is one of the sharpest zooms I've owned. (and yes, I've owned the 70-200 2.8 )

OP, the 1.4x works very well on it. The 2x does add some softness.

Where does it say the ƒ4 version? The ƒ4 version is one of Canon's top five or six for sharpness of ALL.

My comments are directed towards the ƒ2.8 IS version in particular. :)
