I'd use spot if the 400D had it... instead I use partial..

For the same reasons that Perry gives for CWA, I go for Partial generally and narrow it to Spot if it seems necessary. I have never seen any figures for just how much CWA weights the center spot, so I prefer Partial which is a simple average of a known area.

scenes with lots of light & shadow all over the place - evaluative. metering for specific areas of the scene i want given priority - spot. rarely use centre-weighted tho. as mentioned, i find evaluative in flash mode quite reliable too.

Either evaluative or spot metering off the AF point (both with appropriate EC) when on Av, partial when using M.

99% of the time, I don't care what mode is set as this method works with all metering modes: Need an exposure crutch?
