Hi everyone,

I was asked to shoot some baby photos a couple of weeks ago. This is one of the proofs submitted to the client. D30, EF 50mm f/1.4. Shot in colour, selectively desaturated in Photoshop. Comments welcome.

Very cute! I think I would lop a little off the left side, but that's just my preference. Nice job.

Hi Rudi. It's a great shot, and I love the selective desaturation. I do want to refer you to Hal's (eland's) comments on my "B&W Babe" post, which discuss dark tones on a baby. I think they may apply to your shot as well, although personal preference certainly comes into play. See the following:

Cheers,

Mitch

Hi Rudi

Great Pic

Wouldn't change it at all, just curious though what method do you use to mix the colour/B&W, I've tried this in PS7 with Magic wand holding the shift key and changing the feather but it takes ages.

any tips

john

John,

I just selected the toy using "magnetic lasso" tool, then inverted the selection and desaturated the colours. I then cleaned it up a little around the edges of the toy with the "blur" tool. That's it! :D

As it was only a proof, I didn't spend too much time on it. If I need to do the full-size file for printing, I will probably play a little with the channels for a better B&W effect (although it's pretty good as it is) and voila! It's all beer and skittles from then on... :)
