If most of us never visited places like this then we'd probably still be happy shootin' with the kit lens and a 50mm 1.8 innit? This place just sucks the cash out yer wallet as folks strive to get better by buying bigger. Does it really work or is there a middle way predicated on a creative eye, good shootin' craft and sensible buying for bang per buck shootin' impact? Well, I dunno fer sure but I think so. Here is my bang per bucko route to nirvana for the day to day all rounder shooter!

40D
10-20mm HSM EX DC 4.0-5.6
28-105mm 3.5-4.5 USM II
50mm 2.8 EX DG Macro
70-300mm USM 4.0-5.6 IS
400mm 5.6 L
EX430 flasher

Whatcha think? You got a better set of options?

That looks like a good all round low budget kit, but it really depends what you take photos of and where.

Pretty good, but anyone who does not shoot UWA could ditch both the 10-20 and the 28-105 in favor of a fast wide/normal like the Tamron 17-50.

And a lot of people can skip the 400/5.6 althogether. 400mm on a 40D is a pretty long lens.

my bang per buck is my sig - to me nothing else would get me the shot's and IQ i want.
the 600f4 would help but its the weight of it that made me take the 500f4.
Rob.

Sigma 50mm 2.8 EX DG macro
Canon 85mm 1.8
Tamron 17-50mm
Sigma 50-150mm 2.8
Sigma 100-300mm f/4- bought before the price hike.

Thats mine for right now. Add the EX 150 macro and i'm pretty well set. Except for a longer lens, to be named later !
