Do any of the Canon flashes tell how what % of max power went into the last shot?

I usually use a flash for macro shots and try to stop down until the flash output is maximized to get full exposure but as much depth of field as I can get with the amount of light available.

I'm currently using a Canon 380EX flash and quite liking it but I have to keep stopping down until the shot ends up underexposed and then back off. Of course the reflectance of the subject has an effect too.

Do any of the other Canon flashes (220ex, 420ex, 430ex, 550ex, 580ex or the macro flashes) tell how much power went into the last autoexposed flash? I realize that manual flash would also work but I like the autoexposure, I just want to be near the upper limit of output power so I can stop down more but still have regulated output for flash autoexposure.

There is no way that I know of to tell how much flash power was used in E-TTL mode.

One thing that might help you is to keep an eye on the flash exposure confirmation light on your flash unit. If it doesn't light up for a few seconds immediately after a shot, then it didn't have enough power for proper exposure at that aperture.

Keep in mind the guide number of the flash and you will do fine even with no indication of percentage of power! Using the Canon model number as indicator of GN, your flash has GN38 (in meters) or about GN125 (in feet) with ISO 100. If you shoot the unit at full power from a distance of 3', that would require f/42 for proper exposure. Using f/22 on the lens, it would be at half power under Auto control at the 3' distance.
