yep, you can see that the 3rd full window to the left is smaller in width than the others and you can see the stitch point. And the stupid "Great photo spot" sticker high up on the second window lol!

Yeah, shame this thread doesn't really last. It seems most people post in the Australia Thread.

Ah well...

Where in Sydney is everyone based? Can't believe I only just found this thread.

Oh, and if anyone is looking to buy a sharp 35L (or wants to do a trade), let's talk business!

To answer an earlier question - I moved to Darlinghurst a couple of days ago. So about 5 minutes walk from Hyde Park.

Hey, nice to meet everyone up here and around the Sydney area! A very general question to anyone who does paid work (or is a fully fledging professional):

How did you get into it and is it competitive around Sydney? You see, I'm a university student studying something far far away from photography (pure and applied maths - no laughing please), but I have been progressively taking this hobby more and more seriously. Heck who knows, I may even want to eventually make a career out of it. So to move this along, I'll say that my main focus has been putting my shots on the internet for exposure and doing alot of reading in the Business of Photography forum lately.

I wouldn't mind getting into wedding photography eventually, but again this would be a huge leap for me. Any advice from any established shooters? Words of wisdom? :D

I'd say find a certain avenue of photography you enjoy and could handle shooting and learning in for a decent length of time. It's pretty hard to be a "generalist" and be paid well for it - most people shoot one or two categories (ie fashion and weddings, action sport and cars, architecture and landscapes, etc) and make their money from those, then explore other areas for fun.

In my personal experience, i've found an avenue I enjoy, which stemmed from another hobby I had, and have now combined the two and am earning from this. And it's great fun because I have specific ability for this genre so can be better-than-many in this category, and can then transfer various amounts of knowledge to other avenues, and still learn in those. Nothing is static.

Hope that helps, a little.

Thanks Tristan. I totally understand 'following certain avenues' thing, for that's the same deal as maths research (my other 'plan'). I enjoy food photography although I'm not so sure if there's much of a market for these types of photographers.

I've been told that I also shoot cars alright, but a little problem I have is that I know absolutely nothing about them. When it comes to shooting, I know I can get some great angles and perspectives, but I can imagine what'll happen in a real shoot, when some chitchat is inevitably going to occur:

"So bro, what do you think of the <insert technical jargon on cars> in this beast?"
Me: *stupid blank look*

I'd also LOVE to be able to get into wedding photography, for that would just be so rewarding. Some people have been telling me to perhaps seek some assistant photographer jobs just to gain experience.

I love architecture and landscapes too, but again there doesn't seem to be much money in that one. Perhaps commercial photographer for architecture, but landscape photographers just seem to be freelancers who shoot first and if it turns out to be good, try to sell it.

I don't think you should have to know much about cars to make money from shooting them. Yes, perhaps there may be some technical discussion during the shoot, but I think it'd be easy enough to say "well, to be honest I don't know a huge amount about cars, i just enjoy taking photos of them". If you're taking decent photos, I don't think people will mind.

I think seeking assistant jobs is an excellent in-route as well. You meet great people, get to watch a pro, and will learn a heap.

In the end, we all get into photography because we enjoy (and even love) it, so as long as you're enjoying yourself you'll be on the right track to success.
