From what I've read the 1.4x teleconverter does not degrade image quality much if at all if stacked with a good lens.. you lose a stop but the 5D allegedly has one stop better noise so it is a pretty good compromise? My main issue with going from crop to ff is losing reach, otherwise there's no downside besides less fps, losing built in flash and a bigger body? I have a 70-200 F4 IS, I like this range on my 30D, I like the size/weight, and I love the image quality.

You aren't losing any reach. The magnification stays the same. Shoot with your 5d and just crop a bit tighter and you will end up with the same results.

Adding a TC to the 5D is rather silly imo, at least so far as to only reach to goal of trying to gain the "reach" of the 30d, since it won't get you to the same place as your 30d.

Have you ever used a 70-200 on a ff camera? I happen to like that FL even better than I do on my 30d, but could be just me.

Also with the TC you end up with slower AF speed.

Personally, I think if you went with the 5d you wouldn't notice the reach issue the more you used it.,

AFAIK, the 30D will put more "pixels on target" than the 5D, so the 1.4x should help in that regard.

I don't remember the exact calculations, but I think a 5D cropped to 1.6x is something like 5MP.

Don't quote me on that.;)

Edit:

5D image = 4368 x 2912 = 12,719,616 = approx 12MP

5D cropped to 1.6x = (4368/1.6) * (2912/1.6) = 2730 * 1820 = 4,968,600 = approx 5MP

30D image = 3504 x 2336 = 8,185,344 = approx 8MP

Everything I've read says that if you cropped a 5D 12.8mp image to that of a 1.6 crop you would end up with a 5mp image, that doesn't work for me as I often have to crop my 8mp images at 200mm as it is.

Well, I guess a better question to ask, what are your other reason to upgrade, and does it outweigh the "reach" you get with the 30d?

You will lose IQ with a 1.4x tc, it isn't a lot but it happens, and you slow down the AF.

Something else that might be worth you time is renting a 5d and a 1.4 tc and trying it out for yourself :).

yeah i guess at this point you can buy a used 20D for $500 if you need reach, plus you get more fps and a backup body.. vs spending $275 on a 1.4x. i'll stick with my 30d and look into a 5Dmk2 whenever it shows up.. thanks
