that full size version is the best moon shot that i've seen. besides having the reach....what else do you have to do to get a shot like this?

ed rader

Thanks, Ed..... reach + good seeing conditions + patience to do a lot of shots to optimize focus and increase the chances of "getting through" when atmospheric disturbance is least (at 1600 mm and 10x LV, the sharpness of lunar features vary each second even without the rig being touched). :)

that is incredible, simply astonishing. The details are speechless!

what do you mean by compositing 2 frames in PS?

Between 1350 and 1400 mm on the 40D, the full moon fully fills the frame in the shorter dimension. At 1600 mm, part of the full moon was already outside the frame.

I shot with two kinds of framing - one for the upper half and the other for the lower half, then composited/merged the best upper and lower halves in PS.

Another excellent moon, Romy. You repeatedly excel at this!

I still haven't given the 40D it's full workout. I shot the eclipse but was hindered when, even at ISO 3200 and f/5.6, I had to slow down the shutter enough to get blur. I guess I need a tracking mount next time! :)

PS - that sun shot is great as well!

Hmmm.... stars are tough for a long lens without a motorized mount.

Would you settle for Comet Holmes with a few blurry stars thrown in? ;)
