ixus 960is.Total shutdown!!!

Hi every one,hope some one can help.I have just bought a canon ixus 960is from the USA got it back home to England took it out of the box fully charged the battery put it in the camera turned it on and the time and date menu came on the LCD. i began to put in the time and date when the LCD screen went bright white and the zoom lense opened fully then everything went out on the LCD and the camera shut down with the lense still fully extended no idea why is has done this can anyone help me please this is my first canon camera so not sure what may have caused it thank you

Sounds like a warranty issue, and since you bought it in the US, that doesn't sound hopeful. Maybe it's different with the PowerShot line, but the EOS models are warranted either in the US/Canada or Europe, not globally. Still, nothing to lose by asking.
