My Father-in-law asked me if I could fix this photo. So far I've been doing some super-zoomed cloning, which needless to say is a painfully long project. I was thinking that there must be a better, easier, maybe more correct way to do it. Does anyone have some advice they can give me to help restore this image properly? I have CS3 and Lightroom.

I'm not an expert at restoring old pics.
Well I think an easy way is to create a new transparent layer and paint over the skin tones.

Here is a link with a skin tone palette:

You might ask the experts at the retouchpro forum:

They were very helpful when I had a problem...

Thanks to the excellent link you provided, I got the help I needed. Someone was kind enough to get it rolling and I did quite a bit of work on it today. I still need to touch up the fingers, but other than that it's basically done.

Here are the before and afters:

I gave myself one hour to play with this, it came out a bit cartoonish, but for the time is not too bad...

in cs3 I think there is something about it in the help area... I could be wrong and I gotta go pick up my kids so I can't look now. I know any books from adobe about photoshop will have a chapter on it.

Canon "Snappy".... Thanks Mom and Dad!

Nice job.

Probably a one-of-a-kind photo, and valuable to have restored.

Thanks for the kind words :) In total, probably 1/2 of a day between forum help and editing. I never would have gotten this far without help from the retouchpro.com forum, so kudos to that site and the recommendation to the site from here. I'm actually still going to tweak it since I have a couple of weeks left before it's framed and presented at my Father-in-law's 70th, and yes - it's a valuable image for him. I'm glad I was, with the help of others, able to give him something he's going to love.

Thanks for comments and help ;);)
