Here are a few of Kate on a recent shoot for class. The first two are taken with a 580EX off camera to the right, shot through an umbrella. The rest were ambient light with a reflector for fill.

Very nice .... seems like the first two may have a bit more contrast from the background.

Yeah, they do. It was the way I balanced the ambient and flash exposures. I typically make the ambient a full stop or two darker. I missed the focus on number 3.

It was an ambient exposure I took with my incident meter. Then I used a 43 inch gold reflector slightly to camera left and low to fill in the shadows of her face and eyes. t is actually very easy. I personally think it wouldn't have come out as good if I hadn't taken an incident reading.

One of the techniques I use to make the eyes pop in post processing is actually very simple.

I take the lasso tool and select and area bigger than that of the eyes. Next, using the selection, I add a Levels new adjustment layer. Paying attention only to the whites of the eyes and the actual eyes themselves, I bring up the black point slider and bring down the white point slider. When I am done I click ok and take a paint brush on the layer mask, and mask out the overlap. Then I have eyes that really pop.

Great balance of light in the black top images. I like the PP too. Not overdone.

I really like that 4th one. Simple, carefree.

Great Job. I definately am learning more and more about off camera flashes out doors. I am looking forward to see more of you work.

Thanx guys. I am learning a lot this semester. More about posing than anything I think. I have learned a lot about off camera lighting from Strobist.blogspot.com. It is a great site. As far as the stuff they can't teach, just experiment. I can't wait to start in the studio tomorrow. I prefer location lighting, but the studio will be good to.

Nice job! #4 is my favorite. On my monitor I think it could use a *slight* bump in exposure. The lighting is very good.
