Well I finally got a purchase to get the speed ring. Wanted to finally use that SB I bought months ago. Well using http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Ring_for_Elinchrome.html (external link) the adapter does not fit my Amvona universal. I will get pics tonight. Have others had luck with this combo?

I had warned about that back in May. SP ring inserts won't work (diameter too small). It's the Norman ring that you need.

Here's my post about adapting an Amvona ring to Elinchrom lights:

You're welcome! And I answer to "David" or "Dave", not "Sir" :)

Norman rings work great. I ordered from B&H. Takes a couple weeks because they're on special order. But they fit right in just like Dave said.

My mom said not to believe anything I read on the internet

Seriously, great find. It saved me a few hours with a dremel, screw driver, hacksaw, and other dangerous tools.

Now just need to find time to try out all my new toys. Finally got a background set up, muslin, wireless remote, etc. One of these days.

Those Norman rings ALWAYS seem to be on back-order. They're either very popular or in limited production. I happened to get one in the last "batch" B&H had but it was on backorder for about 2 weeks.

I was impatient waiting for it to arrive (had planned to install it on the back of a Speedotron beauty dish) and ended up taking a Calumet Elinchrom adapter ring out of a 36"x48" softbox to mount instead. After my beauty dish tests last weekend the Norman arrived so I went to drop it into my softbox but it was a bit too wide in diameter so I had to do the beauty dish mounting all over again with the Norman ring. Worked out great ... but I'm digressing from the point. Sigh ... Norman's are constantly on back order, aren't they?

I have my on back order or (special order). I tried to order the SP ring as stated above but found it lacking. So RMA'd and awaiting my norman ring.

Here's a Genesis 200 with the stock reflector firing into an umbrella:

QUOTED IMAGE

I agree with you. With the reflectors on, its not enough light when firing into the umbrellas, so I took mine off. However, I believe I have found the perfect use for this. The other day using a 4 light setup, I tried using one of my 200s as a hair light. It spilled too much but I didnt have the reflector with me. I am going to put the reflector in today and try using the 200 as a hair light with no bouncing. I am thinking it should work great due to the limited spread the reflector allows! If not, I can always pick up some of those barn doors that fit them. Will report back later!

If the stock reflector gives too much spread as a hair light and you want to try barn doors, we've established that the inexpensive Interfit barn doors will work fine on that reflector.

Also, if you like using umbrellas (I do), do yourself a favor and try an Elinchrom 6-1/4" umbrella reflector on the Genesis lights. Perfection. No spill and the 45" kit umbrella canopy can be fully (and evenly) illuminated with the light positioned only 12" away.
