Best comeback I've heard:

"Maybe you're right. Here, give it a go."

I believe that the comment is made with refrence to the overall IQ rather than the composition of the shot. Composition aside, the images that come out of my 40D are much better IQ than the images that come out of my SD750. I would think that most of the folks making this "good camera" comment are focusing solely on the IQ of the photo, and in that sense they are absolutely correct.

I ask myself this after almost every shoot... I doubt my abilities\skill....

Everyone is so impressed by all my work, but I feel they are either being nice to me, or they are impressed because of the quality, such as the background blur (their little p&s's don't really produce blur, so they think it looks really cool), the color, the sharpness, ect. But I don't feel they are that special\good! Not sure why though. I guess because when I take the photo I don't think about composition, or the small details, it is all either natural or people are just impressed by the quality. I feel like I am getting worse, as a photographer, but people keep commenting on how much better I am getting...
So I guess I am just under-estimating myself, and I am looking at the technical details, unlike clients\customers\others who look at it, looking for the moment that was captured, and how that moment is illustrated in the photograph.

Can anyone with a good scalpel perform good surgery?

I said the same thing to surgeon friend of mine and he was not amused. "Yours is hardly life threatening work."

So be it, but he still took offence to the comment.

My first Father in Law was an orthopedic surgeon, once at a dinner party the host carved the joint at the table and did a really great job of it, he turned to David (my FIL) and said could you have done that any better? David said no that was really very good, now put it back together again :-)

Technical stuff aside, even if they made a camera that could read your mind and get all the technical stuff absolutely perfect (exposure, focus, etc)...the camera can't be creativite or compose for you.

If my camera could read my mind, it'd reach out and tap me on the forehead twice and say "hey you! I have nothing to go on here!"

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Anyone can take a good picture and on anything.

It takes a certain amount of skill and equipment to do it every time.

Now your really confused, they don't use bats in Golf, your thinking of a Football Bat..

Anyway, I got this really nice set of pro kitchen equipment, nice stainless pans with copper clad bottoms..

It did not help me cook better either.
