When a new camera is purchased does it come with the post recent firmware updates or does that need to be done upon opening?

Depends. I just got a 7D a week ago, and it still has 1.2.2.

Depends how long it's been sitting on the retailer's shelf. But I wouldn't worry too much it will still work fine.

Thanks, so it sounds like it should have one of the more recent updates but maybe not the very latest.

Mine came with 1.2.2 as well. Not sure if I need the update or not for my purposes, or is it best to always update?

Is 1.0.7 the latest for the 50D?

Dumb Question #1: Can I update directly from version 1.0.7 to 2.0.8 without doing any of the intermediate updates?
Dumb Question #2: The procedure is to download the update to the hard drive, drag it onto the CF card, insert the CF card into the camera, and then go to the Firmware setting on the menu and the camera does the rest. . .correct?
I have never updated the Firmware because I have been concerned about messing something up. Right now I have no issues whatsoever with my camera.
Thanks for your help with this.

Just print out and follow the detailed instructions on the download page, it is very simple.

Mine came with 1.2.2, while I had a blank CF card I upgraded it to 1.2.3. No real advantage I guess but may well take anything Canon give out for free.

Does anyone know why Canon specifies a 2gb or less CF card for the 20D firmware update? I only have 4gb CF cards and truly dont want to buy a 2gb card to do the 2.0.3 firmware update from the 1.0.4.

I can only assume it's because up until a certain firmware the 20D only supported up to 2GB cards (I think).

Surely you've got some crappy 32MB card lying around that came with an old camera that you can use just for a firmware upgrade? If not I would still give the 4GB card a go. Pretty sure it pulls the firmware from the card, does a checksum on it, and THEN flashes it, so using a 4GB card shouldn't be too risky.

I wish I did, home for the holidays from Denver (currently in seattle) and received a 20d today as a late christmas present so I only have three of my 4gb cards and all my other ones are in CO (wont be back another week and a half) so want to get this done with asap.

Could it be that the 20D uses a FAT16 file system --which supports up to 2GB--, and not a FAT32?
