I think the guy in number 6 is dead. Either that, or he needs more riding lessons. Where were these taken? I want to see a joust!

What lens / camera were you using?

Good shots, looks like that would be a fun event to shoot. Shouldn't it say Ye Olde Fudge shoppe?..:)
edit: oops, topic. Yes I believe it's a sport.

Sure it a sport, and it predates most of the ones we talk about now adays..

though the idea of even "pretending" to joust without a helm is just insanity!

Nice shots :)

The guy in No.6 is trying to spike a small sack of hay on the ground to score points, as is the woman in the next shot. These were taken at the Selby Game Fair (or Fayre) which was held this Easter weekend at Carlton Towers near Goole, Yorkshire. I was using a 70-200 f2.8 IS on a 1d mkIIn, I took along another couple of rigs as well but as the place was covered in mud and it was snowing on and off they stayed in the bag on my back.

Most Rennisance Festivals (Ren Fairs) have Jousts, usually with Balsa wood Jousts and yes, thy all wear Helms here in the states (at least all the ones I've seen). I wish the background had been more "middle ages". Great shots.

The Jousting took part in the main arena, there were other events taking place as well. when the jousting finished the falconry team moved in; when they'd finished the motorcycle stunt team moved in; so what ever the background was it wouldn't have suited every act. There's only one picture of them actually jousting and the rider had just lost his helmet on the first pass, in the others that look as if they are about to meet up soon they are in fact charging at a shield on a swivelling post so no opponents lance is heading towards them.

Very cool images, like the series very much, have never seen this other than in a movie, looks like it is fun if the weather is with you. Thanks for sharing these.

I think you need to either up your ISO or shoot with your aperture wide open (I haven't looked at your EXIF) because there's a LOT of blur in your images, together with some missed focus points and a need to crop more tightly.

Aside from that your timing's pretty good for catching the peak of the action, I just think you need to sharpen your images up a 'tad'; no more.

Sorry. Bad day today. :(

I think with hindsight I probably should have up'd the iso a little, I don't like shooting wide open except as a last resort; I like a little dof in the shots. The shots are already cropped as far as I could realistically take them as they are starting to look blurry; even though they are sharpened a "tad" (probably too much as stated).
Thanks for looking.

By the way, I would be interested to know where these shots were taken.

He only has to sit on a horse, not run a marathon... He does seem very friendly with the other knight who is wearing way too much eyeshadow though... All that leather and chain mail - I suspect the jousting is "just an excuse" ;)

The two (small cough here) Knights in that shot had just been (another small cough here) fighting hand to hand for 10 minutes, no small feat if the armour had been real; and not a horse in sight.
