Nicely framed shot and good exposure. You may want to use a faster shutter speed (1/640?) because the hooves are still a bit blurry. I normally use 1/640 for hunter-jumpers and it seems to stop the hoof motion effectively.

I use my 70-200 2.8L IS. I'm not sure the 85mm has enough reach. I've read that you always want to get the rider's face if possible, and all of the horse if possible. Here is what 200mm got me (with my old Rebel XT):

It depends on the event. I have been asked not to use flash because it spooks the horses. Check with the event director/judge(s) at your event to see if it is ok.

Flash is almost always forbidden at horse shows in Europe except for the prize ceremonies.

Nice framing and timing. It's hard to say much else as the image is so compressed and just look blurry.

When shooting them from the side you usually need at least 1/640 to freeze them well. When you shoot more in front of a fence you an get away with slower speeds.

I never seen flash prohibited. I was watching a show on Arabian show horses last night. In every type of class they had someone taking pictures

I know that you can use them on exhibition shows from time to time but i meant shows with competing horses like show jumping or dressage.

It's nothing more than common sense really.
