Canon Europe is currently holding a big contest - The Assignment (external link). Anyone who lives in the listed countries can register and submit a photo. The categories are: Portrait, Landscape, Macro and Sports. Only one photo per category is allowed. You may enter national or internationl category.

If you enter the international category you have the chance to compete against others from all of Europe. Then perhaps off to Euro 2008 and if you hit the jackpot, win your dream assignment.

What would your dream assignment be?

Well Scotland isnt listed so my next choice would definitely be Ireland. I'd just go and take a PJ approach to it all and just have some fun!

Jeff, we're not talking about any listings there. We're talking about what would your ultimate dream assignment be. :) Would you jump out of a plane with camera in hand? Shadow the British forces, the royal family, try underwater photography or something totally different?

Flatterer! For that you don't need to compete against the rest of the world, just buy a ticket to Sweden, or better yet, buy me a ticket to come over to your end of the world. :p

That or shooting the America's I guess. Or just going to another country for travel photography.

Already did it...shot the whole F1 series in 1978. Maybe now they have started back towards real racing (no more traction control crap) I would consider doing it again. Nah...they still want you to sign away your life and your images.

First choice would be with the LA Fire Dept shooting them working a large, multi-alarm fire. Taking shots from up close, right behind the guys working a line or on the ladder truck. Basically, right in the middle of the action capturing the emotion of the firefighters.

Or maybe on assignment with a multinational humanitarian mission overseas.

Gear: Kodak Brownie and homemade pin-hole cameras. Burlap sack for a bag.

I'm assuming even though you have to sign off rights to your images this is still probably a hard to get, low paying job? Would this be correct/how hard is it to get a job doing this? Were you shooting for a magazine/paper or for the f1 league?

If I got that level of access for one race, I wouldn't be bothered about selling the images. Just so long as I could use them for myself.

Newspaper...and the requirements were much less restrictive in those days. The pay really depends on who you are shooting for. Today most credentials go to major media outlets such as AP, Getty, Reuters, SI and the like. You can check their sites for employment opportunities, but you can expect to cover a lot of local events before you ever get considered for a major event.
