My 70-200mm f/4 IS USM "L" lens will be here today! :D

This is my first "L" lens.

My plan along along was to buy an extender for it for all the obvious reasons one would.

I thought I would get the 2X II but I see many recommending the 1.4X instead.

What are the advantages and disavantages, if any, to either from those who have them and use them on a similar lens?

BTW, it one or the other, not both.

Thanks. ;)

I used both with good success on my 70-200. I'd recommend getting the 1.4x over the 2x

Without knowing what body you have...the quick answer is the 1.4x...since that will still AF on any of the Canon bodies. A 2x TC will only AF on a 1 series body since the resultant combination is f/8.

Yep, on your 40D, you will lose the ability to AF with an f4 lens + 2x TC.
Not to mention the IQ degradation.

Although to be honest, I once had the 5D + 70-200 f2.8 IS + 2x TC and the results were decent. Certainly not up to the 100-400L standards however.

I would stick with the 1.4x. You have far less IQ degradation and you keep AF on your 40D.

On a 40D...the 1.4x wins in a no brainer...if you think you want 2x...buy two 1.4x converters and stack them, which will allow you to keep AF since only one TC reports to the camera.

As far as which TCs to snag...I am a big fan of the Tamron SP Pro line...the image quality is right up there with the Canon OEM units...with the added advantages of being less expensive, lighter and fitting a wider variety of lenses.

Even though I have a number of TCs, my thought is that for most people having 2 1.4xs is much more versatile than a 2x. Few lenses take a 2x well. Start with one 1.4x - the EF 1.4x II is a great one.

Also look at the Kenko 300 DG Pro 1.4x. It's much cheaper than the Canon (less than half if you get it from one of the Hong Kong eBay sellers), and has almost identical optical performance. It also will work on ALL lenses, not just those specifically designed for the Canon 1.4x, as it has no protruding element. I love mine. It works very well with the 70-200 f/4 IS.

This is a 100% crop, wide open with the Kenko 1.4x and 70-200mm @ 280mm:

I agree, this is a good TC for the price.

Some of the info in the TC fAC is old.

I was just going to suggest this one as well... Tamron 1.4x SP AF Pro Teleconverter for Canon EOS - For Telephoto Lenses 90mm & Longer with Maximum Apertures of f/2.8 or Larger
