Preseumably there will be some runout specials on the 400D with the new model just around the corner. I like the picture styles idea on the 400D and am wondering if this really is a big step forward for tourist/walkaround photograpy when you couldn't be bothered getting right into camera settings to tweak every shot. Also, do the extra 2 megapixels make much difference?
The lenses I'd be considering are the Tamron 28-75 and, later, possibly the 70-200f4 L in lieu of our 28-135IS. Will the Tamron/400D combination be markedly superior to the 350D/28-135IS??
Thanks,

Hal55

Given the price difference between a used XT vs XTi being as low as it is, yes, the 400D is better than the 350D. Back when it first came out and folks were comparing the XT at that time to the XTi, it was a harder decision.

one reason I went with the XTI over the XT was because it wasnt much difference in cost.. To me, I perfer the bigger LCD! 2MP's can make a difference also in bigger prints. If you can sell your XT and not loose much, give the XTI a shot. Its gonna take the same quailty images for the most part, just a few new features.

If you want picture styles, just shoot RAW and select whichever style you want in DPP. I've played with styles a bit in my 30D and they can give nice effects. But I use standard most of the time.

DPP will give you the full range of styles and doesn't cost anything.

To those who say I never recommend RAW: :p

(This is one of the cases where it's the best choice.)

When I did this upgrade the thing I appreciated the most was the larger display and the improved AF.

IQ was not much different IMO.

For the price these days the 400D would be worth it over the 350D. As mentioned above the extra megapixels is nice to have and the larger screen. I use mine with the tamron 28-75 and it's a great combo for my style of shooting.

If your 350D is not giving you any issues, save up for a 40D or even a 450D once its price goes down a bit (you lose out on the CF cards if you go 450D though)

The XTi's superior focusing ability becomes readily apparent with an f2.8 or faster lens (like the Tamron) in low light situations or when using a narrow DOF. This alone made the upgrade essential for me after I upgraded lenses. The larger LCD screen was a welcome bonus.
