Got my Tokina 17 3.5 Pro Yesterday

....haven't had much of a chance to test it out, but I like its appearance and build...it seems tough! The dis-engaged MF ring is kind of a cool feature too. Is it very beneficial in improving the AF speed when dis-engaged?

Maybe if I get home in time to have some daylight to use, I can post some test shots...of course, I'm a teacher...what am I talking about. I don't ever see daylight during the week!

Are there any specific issues with this lens that I should be aware of/take time to test out? Flaring in certain conditions? Distortion top/bottom or side/side? Ultra-Wide angles are new to me.

Yes post some samples and opinions.
Flare resistance and low distortion is the hallmark of this lens.
It probably has the best flare resistance of any (ultra) wide angle lens.
The only thing to note is sometimes under extreme conditions you may get some fringing near the corners. However, it's still supposed to be very good in this respect considering it is an (ultra) wide angle lens.

It's good that you like the dis-engaged MF ring setup. It takes some getting used to, so some people dont like it. However, once you figure out how to use it, the manual focus ring is one of the smoothest around.

...well, I've got another wedding in a couple weeks. Hopefully, I'll have something worth posting for that....I'm planning to use this lens to photograph the wedding party on this winding staircase that the bride specifically wants.... BTW, any ideas or samples of this kind of shot with a wide angle? Anyone?

Funny you should mention it.
Some guy wrote a review of the Tokina 17mm in the Miranda forums.
One thing he was especially impressed with was it's flare resistance, and he posted this link to his website where he has wedding pictures taken with this lens, into the sun, to prove it.

....man, this thing is wide!!! The color & contrast is great and it seems to be pretty sharp too! I haven't really noticed any issues with it yet! I must say I'm pretty happy with the Tokina 17 so far! Thanks for recommending it again!

From what I've seen so far - wide angle shots are quite difficult to master, but once one gets hold on it, he can produce wonderful images with it.
