Sam

Did you check to make sure that the 580EX is not in Master or Slave mode?

I think that only works with the 580EX II, not the original 580EX. It's grayed out on mine as well. You will have to set it on the flash itself.

You should still be able to set the 2nd curtain sync function on the body, though. Maybe it needs to be set from the "Built-in flash func setting" option instead of from the "External flash func setting" option.

Good thought PacAce, but I tried it and I get a "This menu cannot be displayed. External flash is attached" message.

Well, so much for that idea. What I find perplexing is why the 1DmkIII allows 2nd curtain to be set via the camera but the 40D won't.

Agreed PacAce. It looks like the 40D and the original 580EX only will let you set FEC and E-TTL II metering mode via the camera menu. All the other options are grayed out.

Strange little glitch - but I assume you can set 2nd curtain synch on the flash itself easily enough?
i've always done it that way, less to trawl through!

Oh yes. Two pushes on the High Speed Sync button on the back of the flash and you're there. Quicker than navigating the menus on the camera IMHO.

Well, I just tried to set the 2nd curtain sync on my 1D3 via the external flash settings menu and could not (for a non-580EX II flash). The only way to set 2nd curtain sync on the 1D3 is via custom function C.Fn II-5 = 1. Unfortunately, the 40D does not have an equivalent custom function option.

Thank you guys. It just kind of stupid because Canon is trying to push me to upgrade all my flash...

You mean you couldn't get 2nd curtain sync via the camera, right? Because you can set 2nd curtain sync on the flash itself which is easier and faster to get to than via a camera menu or custom function. And the flash setting always overrides the camera setting for 2nd curtain sync if the flash has this feature which is true for all current EX flashes other than the 220EX. In other words, the 2nd curtain sync via the camera is useless for all current EX flashes because the flash setting will always override it. It is only useful when used with the 420EX and lower models which don't have the 2nd curtain sync feature on the flash.
