Ok am about to order this from B&H . does anyone have any idea what the UK Government will sting me for on Import Duty and VAT?

Import duty is 4-6% (depending on who you ask!). VAT is 17.5% on the total cost - note that VAT is payable on the postage costs as well :( You'll probably also get stung for £10 or more 'handling charge' by the courier for sorting out the taxes.
I'd suggest working out the total cost before placing the order. Bear in mind that the pound/dollar conversion rate is usually about 2% worse than expected, when you pay by credit card (I tend to use http://www.oanda.com/convert/classic (external link)).
http://www.7dayshop.com (external link) are selling the lens for £429, including all taxes and charges. It will probably be sourced from the US but, if there is a warranty issue, you'll be able to send it back to the Channel Islands rather than the USA. Might be worth considering as an alternative?

I use my 70-200 f2.8 L IS handheld sometimes, but when covering sports I ALWAYS put it on a monopod, really saves your arms after 90minutes!

And in regards to warranty issues, all lenses have a worldwide warranty, it's the bodies etc. that you'll have issues with.

Hi All

I am just about to order this lens, I have a couple of questions.

Is it too heavy to hand hold, do I need to mount it on a tripod all the time? If so then I guess that answers my second question of do I need the tripod mount.

Or

Can I mount it on a tripod with the mount , or will it topple over

cheers

hi,if you get it in the uk,try 7 day shop its about £430 inc
vat and shipping. :D

if you are going to buy it from abroad, get it from europe as the waranty will be valid in the UK - Canon UK wont touch anything that comes from the US.

I bought mine in the US, while I was there, and it came with an international warranty card, which surely is international?

I called canon UK when I found out my camera was coming from france. They said they would only honour the waranty on European purchases.

They were very specific when they said "we do not touch equipment from the US".

The person above who had his camera fixed must have been lucky.
