Hi i am going to donnigton later in year for moto gp going to hire 100- 400 and 70 - 200 i think. i have bought a weekend pass and intend to go with camera saterday and see what pics i can get then just watch the racing on sunday. Now given i will be wrong side of fence for pics whers the best places for me to get some good pics. I used to love seeing them slide out of coppice but would have to take pic through fence:cry:. Is there any way i can get the other side of fence for the saturday or must you be a proffessional? If i cant get other side of fence am i wasting my time hiring lenses?

Cheers shane

That time of year already ??? Fences are no biggie, you just need a long enough lens. You might want to forget the zooms, and get a 300 f2.8 and either 1.4x or 2x t-cons. Both pics are with these combos, outside the wire, during qualifying. Get there early.;)

bileb0rg great pics just the sort of thing i am after both look infield to me coppice and goddards? I was thinking of zooms as a test drive to maybe buying one need to justify expense as to how often may use . When using t-cons do you loose auto focus forgot to mention my camera is a 30D and have 28 - 135 is lens.

Correct, Goddards and Coppice
The t-cons both worked fine on my 400D, even stacked, so you shouoldn't have any problems.
Again, forget the zooms, just rent (or buy) a 300 f2.8. You'll see why when you get home and view the pics. And once you've got one, you'll look for reasons to use it.

ouch there no way can afford one of those babies. I may still hire it for the day but look to be able to buy a lens that i can use for the racing and still use for other stuff. Hence why i was look at the 100-400 as so many rave on about it.
What your thought on the 300 f4 now i might be able to sort the funds out for one of those.
Cheers shane

Had a 300 f4, loved it, sold it. A good stop gap, and takes a 1.4x quite well, not sure if the 100-400 fares as well. Check out the Archive thread.
I checked Donnys web site, and if you were feeling really lucky, you could try applying for a media pass from dave@nick-harris.co.uk (external link)

After looking at pics looks like 300mm f4 might be a winner especially with the price tag they going on ebay for around £650. At that price i may not wait for racing before getting one as from pics i have seen i can use for other things than just racing . Out of interest on your pics which pic was done with which tcon? After doing lots of looking around kind of get confused though as like you8 most people who get this lens dont seem to have it long before they sell it and get the F2.8 yes it is sharper but i cant justify the price as only a hobbiest. Then you look at the voting on which outdoor sports lens and most gone for the 70- 200 . On the press pass i may skip this time as going with a friend might be able to get a 20d fform a friend for a day so could try and blag 2 passes do you think feasable . Also if did what other lens would you take ?
Cheers shane

First pic is with the 2x, second is 1.4x.
You could always have a look for a used 300 f2.8. Good, non IS lenses are are exceptional value, IS ones are a little thinner on the ground though.
One pass would be a result, and I wold think anyone outside of a publisher would struggle to get two.
As for extra gear, it seems it's not what you take, it's more the "look". Go for "urban warrior" and you should fit in fine.;)
