I understand what the FX is but I don't see the need to use them inside the HiLite. It's a waste of light and power, and you could just as easily rig up or tape/velcro the gel in front of the flash head without the FX. If you were using the flash on its own then I could understand using it. In this application I see it as unnecessary. Just my opinion.

I agree, I just didn't want to put tape or whatever on the oversize gel's it came with.

I'm anal that way...

I'm use to your detective face Avatar.

Now I actually have to read your screen name to know it's you... :)

I have a lot of trouble with subject light getting on the BG. What size softbox did you use?

It's funny... many people thought that was a picture of me and just as many thought it was Elvis Costello. It was actually Peter Sellers. I thought he was one of the funniest men ever.

I knew it wasn't you, but it became the face I knew here and reminded me when I saw your old posts at PCB...

That is what I was trying to explain and stress the importance of subject area isolation. Part of the reason why many people can't get the background to drop and get darker is because they have their subject lighting striking the background and defeating the lower level from the background.

I used a 24" x 32" softbox but it's not really about the size of the box. The key is that I used a grid and the placement of the box. You can't have your main light too close to the lens's axis and I used a reflector as a fill source so that the inefficiency of the reflector would work in my favor and not throw even more light on the background. If I had used a powered light source with a 60" umbrella as my fill I wouldn't be able to maintain subject isolation.

To be able to execute this type of lighting you must have control and you must have independent exposures for subject and background.

As you know, I no longer participate or visit PCB. I won't get into that.

So now you can get used to my big yellow flower... but don't get too used to it. You never know when it may change again. ;)

I remember you just disappearing, but not the reason why.

I only remember your last posts when you made your custom choke cable for power output and than you were gone. You didn't want to buy the expensive device for the one flash.

Nevermind, sorry, bad carma...

Mario,

The primary reason was that I was no longer using Alien Bees strobes and I'm really not into belonging to and following many forums. I stick with 2 forums primarily.

One is POTN, which I consider my home, and now that I am a Nikon shooter I enjoy Nikon Cafe.

I tried that ridiculous remote control and returned it immediately. The controls were worse and even more coarse than the slider on the back of the strobes. It was like an on/off switch with absolutely no precision and no way to accurately adjust the power.

Gotcha', not to stray from the topic.

photo.net was my first site I joined, but it has changed quite a bit in 4 years.
I still stay active and renew.

I liked PCB because I felt there were a ton of beginners like me and had stumbled on the site by accident.

I use all Speedlite's (Too imbarased to say how many.) but wanting to learn lighting because I always screw something up.

POTN is a great site though hat i found in recent times and I frequent it throughout the day.

Oh and I apologize.
I just saw your signature asking to be called Robert and I've been calling you by your screen name.
I'll resist the temptation to do it... :)

No problem Mario. I just figure it's friendly enough around here and I'm no stranger so people can call me by my name rather than a user ID.
