If you don't want it blurring "everything more than an inch away from from what is in focus" you need to stop down to get greater DoF. Shallow DoF is one of the biggest charms of the wide apertures.

To get your subject in focus, and f/8 is commonly known as a "sweet spot". Once you stop down around f/16-22 you risk sharpness and clarity.

Yes, diffraction. Goodness I was drawing a huge blank there for a minute. I know it wasnt chromatic aberration. That typically happens with larger apertures.

That reminds me of Shrek 2 when the cat says "uh... that's not mine" (when they are arresting him and find a "baggie" of cat nip), I love that part.
