If you don't want it blurring "everything more than an inch away from from what is in focus" you need to stop down to get greater DoF. Shallow DoF is one of the biggest charms of the wide apertures.

Yes, diffraction. Goodness I was drawing a huge blank there for a minute. I know it wasnt chromatic aberration. That typically happens with larger apertures.
