I get asked a lot how I make my borders for my images so I decided to make a little tutorial on how to make an action script for Photoshop.

*EDIT* I now have a 'Add Logo' tutorial posted:
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?p=5231511

Step 1

Start with an image that is ready to go and flattened. I started with an image that was 800 pixels by 534 pixels in size.

Open your actions pallet and start a new action and name it as you wish:

IMAGE: http://www.scottkroeker.com/photos/bordertutorial/a.gif

Step 2

Open your Layer's Pallet and make your background image a floating layer by double clicking on the background layer and clicking OK.

Step 3

Now you need to change your canvas size to make room for the border. (ALT+CTRL+C)Windows (Apple+Option+C)Mac. I used 50 pixels for this tutorial but you can set it to what ever you like. Keep in mind that entering 50 pixels will result in a border that is 25 pixels thick. Make sure to check "Relative" when editing the canvas size. Once you're done editing click OK.

Step 4

Now you need to add a new layer and fill it with the Paint Bucket Tool with the color of your choice and drag the layer below your image layer. For this tutorial I chose black as the border color.

Step 5

Now to add the little thin borders to the image layer. On your Layer's Pallet, click on the image layer and then click on the 'fx' pull-down menu and choose Stroke.

IMAGE: http://www.scottkroeker.com/photos/bordertutorial/5.gif

Change the stroke color to a color of your choice (White for this tutorial). Set the size to your liking (in this tutorial I set it to 1 pixel) and Position to Inside. Blending mode Normal and set the Opacity to 100%.

IMAGE: http://www.scottkroeker.com/photos/bordertutorial/6.gif

Now to add the second thin border on the inside of the first thin border. With the Layer Style window still open click on Inner Shadow style. Set the Opacity to 100%, Distance to 0, Choke to 100% and Size to your liking. In this tutorial I chose 3 pixels. Then click OK. Note that you must set the Size to more then what you set the Stroke size to or the stroke will hide the inner shadow.

Step 6

We are done making the border you can now flatten your image. Then got back to your Actions Pallet and stop recording your new action.

End

That's it!

You now have an action to add borders with a single click.

Here is the result of this tutorial:

Thanks Scott!
Can adding one's name and copyright info (as you did in you finished image) also be recorded into the action (at the end)? is that what you did?

Thank you and you're welcome :)

Yes you can Phil. I have a separate action for this. Basically before stopping the recording of the action, simple open up your image file and copy it, close it and paste it into the working file. I have yet to take the time to figure out how to get the copyright logo to place at the bottom. Right now it simply drops into the middle of the image and I manually move it to the bottom.

I guess, since it is type, you could make the action using type and setting it manually. I might give that a try yet.

Thanks for posting this - I nearly had it right but I'm using photoshop 7 so I think the commands are slightly different - but I'm much further ahead than I would have been without this! Thanks again

Thanks. This was definitely something I needed. How about everyone posts their borders that they made.
